Thelen was a two-time All-Conference golfer for the Huskies, and a two-time letterwinner. He shot a career best 69 twice. The first one was in 1982 at the Harvey Penick Intercollegiate in the third round, and the other one was in the Henry Homberg Intercollegiate in the second round. Thelen also had four top ten finishes at HBU.
