Houston Christian Athletics takes great pride in our student-athletes. In order to follow NCAA, Conference, and institutional rules you must first know them. This page and the Student-Athlete Handbook are intended to help student-athletes become familiar with common issues. And as always the compliance office is ready with to help. We are not only here to do rules education sessions but to answer questions year-round.
Student-Athlete Handbook
The student-athlete handbook is a great resource to get a high level look at the rules, rights, and responsibilities for every student-athlete.

NCAA Health Related Resources
The following link includes information for sports medicine, drug testing policies and the banned drug list, information on sickle cell trait, and weight management. If you have any further questions on any of these topics, supplements, or any other health related topics, please go see our friendly staff in the athletic training room.Â
Health and Safety
Gambling -Â "Don't bet on it"
There is ultimately a reason that the NCAA does not allow gambling; it could potentially undermine the integrity of sports contests and jeopardizes the welfare of student-athletes and the intercollegiate athletics community. Gambling includes any activity that the bettor can win a prize or money, even without putting money on the line up front, on professional or amateur sports. So keep it clean.

Employment
As a student-athlete, you are allowed to work. However before you begin working you must get it approved by your coach and the compliance office. The employment agreement must meet three criteria:
Â
- The student-athlete will be paid only for work actually performed.
- The student-athlete will paid at a fair market value equal to that for other similar positions in the immediate area of employment.
Amateurism and Tryouts
If you are planning on playing or trying out for an outside team, please stop by the compliance office so that we can make sure participating with the non-HCU team will not affect your eligibility. Student-athletes may not get paid like a professional, sign with an agent, or compete on a team where teammates are being paid to play.

Sportsmanship
The NCAA, The Conference and HCU promote good sports conduct by student-athletes, coaches, staff, and spectators. We request student-athletes’ cooperation by supporting the participants and officials in a positive manner. Profanity, racist, sexist or homophobic comments or other intimidating actions directed at officials, student-athletes, coaches, team representatives or spectators will not be tolerated and are grounds for discipline on and off the field of play.
HCU Student Resources
The university offers many resources to help students throughout their tenure at HCU. Please use this site to guide you in whatever area you need help in around the university.

Academics
In order to maintain academic eligibility and graduate on-time, student-athletes receive support from their coaches, the compliance office, and academic support services. Before making any changes to an academic plan (including class schedules and majors), student-athletes must receive approval from the Director of Academics or Compliance Office. Furthermore, student-athletes who need help in a specific class or improving study skills generally can work with
HCU’s Academic Success Center, an invaluable partner of the HCU Athletics Department.
Financial Aid
Please remember that every student should complete the FAFSA every year. The earlier students get this done, the less confusion they will have later on. For questions contact the HCU Financial Aid office.
