Who is a "Representative of Athletic Interests?"
A representative of the institution's athletics interests or “booster” can be an individual, independent agency, corporate entity or other organization.
You are a Booster if:
- You have ever made financial contributions to the athletic department or a specific team.
- You ever played a role in promoting in HCU athletics, including participation.
- You have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families.
- You have assisted in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes.
- You have ever been a Husky season ticket holder.
According to NCAA rules, once an individual has been identified as an institutional "representative of athletic interests" the individual
IS A BOOSTER FOR LIFE!
Houston Christian University is ultimately responsible for the acts of all "representatives of athletic interests" in relation to NCAA rules and regulations.
Important Reminders for Recruiting:
- Boosters CAN NOT be involved in the recruiting process. Only HCU staff members may recruit prospective student-athletes. Boosters may not contact a prospect in any way, be it in-person, online (including social media), on the phone or through the mail.
- Boosters CAN NOT contact an enrolled student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of encouraging transfer to HCU and participation in our athletic program.
- Boosters CAN NOT have any involvement with a prospect during an official or unofficial visit to the HCU campus.
- Boosters CAN NOT provide benefits of any kind to prospects or their families.
Boosters
MAY CONTINUE to maintain pre-existing relationships with neighbors and friends who have prospect age children as long as you do not encourage participation in HCU athletics.
- Boosters MAY attend high school and junior college athletic events assuming no attempt is made to contact the prospect or his/her coaches.
- Boosters MAY attend a public event (high school awards banquet) at which prospects are in attendance. No attempt should be made to recruit a prospect.
- Boosters MAY discuss summer employment arrangements with a prospect AFTER he/she has signed a National Letter of Intent and those communications are run through the compliance office.
Important Reminders for Engaging with Current HCU Student-Athletes: Boosters must be aware of how they are allowed to interact with current Huskies and what activities could jeopardize their eligibility and the athletics programs generally.
Boosters CAN NOT:
- Provide cash or loans in any amount.
- Sign off or co-sign a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan.
- Provide gifts of any kind (e.g. birthday) or free services (airline tickets, laundry, meals in restaurants).
- Provide discounts for goods or services.
- Provide use of an automobile.
- Provide hospitality or lodging in your home.
- Provide transportation within or outside of the campus area. (e.g. from campus to your home, from the airport to campus, to summer job, etc.).
- Use the name or picture of an enrolled student-athlete to directly advertise, recommend or promote sales or use of a commercial product or service of any kind. Even the sale of a picture of an enrolled student-athlete would jeopardize his/her eligibility.
Boosters CAN:
- Provide occasional meals to student-athletes in specified locations with pre-approval from the compliance office.
- Interact with student-athletes so long as no extra benefits are conferred.
- Donate to the athletics department through established channels.
- Cheer loud and proud.
