Cruz was an All-American for the Huskies in 1985, and a two-time All-Red River Athletic Conference player. He is second all-time in single-season-points at 52 in 1985. He had 20 goals and 12 assists that season. Cruz attempted 81 shots that year which is the third most in a season. Cruz is tied for fourth in career points with 75 with 29 of those points goals, and 17 of them assists. He is also fifth all-time in career shots attempted at 171.
