Photo GalleryHOUSTON – HBU had plenty of scoring opportunities, but couldn't cash in enough, leaving 23 total runners on base in two games, as Southeastern Louisiana swept a Southland Conference doubleheader, 3-2 and 6-1, Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
In the first game, junior lefthander
Matthew McCollough (7-2) took the loss for HBU (21-19, 12-8 SLC), allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts in eight and one-third innings.
Junior leftfielder
Brandon Morones went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while senior catcher
Samm Wiggins went 2-for-5 with a double and junior shortstop
Louie Payetta, senior third baseman
Curtis Jones and junior second baseman
Greg Espinosa had two hits each. Senior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir drove in both runs.
Tate Scioneaux (6-2) earned the win for SELA (32-12, 16-4), allowing two runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts in eight innings. Kyle Keller earned his second save of the season, allowing a walk and a hit in the ninth.
Jacob Seward was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, while Daniel Midyett was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Kennon Menard was 2-for-4 with a double, and Carson Crites doubled and scored.
The Lions scored a pair of runs in the third inning, as Crites led off with a double and Chris Eades singled. Ryan Byers was hit by a pitch to load the bases, then Seard singled in a run and Eades scored on a throwing error. McCollough pitched out of the jam, but SELA led, 2-0.
SELA added a run in the fifth when Seward singled, then Midyett smacked a two-out double down the leftfield line.
Junior first baseman
Andrew Alvarez and Morones led off the sixth with back-to-back singles, moved up on a sacrifice bunt by senior rightfielder
Thomas Clay, then scored on a two-run single by Nehrir to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the second game, Wiggins was 2-for-4 for HBU, junior designated hitter
Austin Saenz was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Espinosa singled to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Seward was 2-for-5 with a run, Byers was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and scored twice, Breatt Hoffman was 2-for-5 with an RBI and Kennon Menard 2as 2-for-4 with a run.
Jake Johnson (8-1) picked up the win for the Lions, allowing an unearned run, on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in seven innings. Kade Granier tossed two perfect innings of relief.
Taylor Wright (6-5) took the loss, giving up two runs on eight hits in five innings.
SELA scored in the third on a sacrifice fly by Crites, the scored in the fourth on an RBI double by Eades to take a 2-0 lead.
HBU got on the board in the fifth when Jones reached on an error and scored on Saenz's RBI single.
The Lions scored three in the seventh as Byers led off with a double to left. With the bases loaded, Midyett lifted a sacrifice fly to center, but an error allowed two more to come in and push SELA's lead to 5-1. The Lions tacked on a run in the ninth on an RBI bunt single by Hoffman.
The series concludes with a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Husky Field.
