ABILENE, Texas – HBU kept its power surge going, hammering out 20 hits, including six more home runs, in a 13-5 victory over Abilene Christian to clinch the Southland Conference series Saturday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field.
Junior centerfielder
Jonathan Ducoff went 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs, drove in four and scored three times, while senior second baseman
Jack Fitzgerald also went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, drove in three and scored twice for the Huskies (16-19, 8-5 SLC). Sophomore third baseman
Elijah Simon went 2-for-5 with a pair of solo shots and senior first baseman
Jake Pulcheon went 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBIs and scored twice. Senior shortstop
Tyler Depreta-Johnson went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run and junior rightfielder
Anthony Jones went 4-for-6.
Senior lefthander
Matthew McCollough (5-1) earned the victory, allowing three runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and two walks in eight innings. He moved within one of breaking into HBU's all-time top five in strikeouts.
Riley Donahue went 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and scored a run, while Matt Munoz went 3-for-4 with a double and scored for the Wildcats (16-17, 3-14).
Garrett Hutson (3-1) took the loss for ACU, giving up nine runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings.
ACU got on the board first as Derek Scott doubled and Donahue followed with a two-run shot to rightcenter in the bottom of the first.
Fitzgerald doubled down the rightfield line and scored on a single by Depreta-Johnson in the third.
Ducoff tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth, then Fitzgerald ripped a three-run homer to rightcenter, his third of the season, to put HBU ahead, 5-2.
The Huskies added four more in the fifth on an RBI groundout by senior designated hitter
Matt Heck, then Pulcheon unloaded a two-run blast to left. Ducoff added a solo shot to left to extend the lead to 9-2.
Seth Watts led off the fifth with a single for the Wildcats, stole second and scored on Colton Eager's single to cut the deficit to six.
Ducoff unloaded a two-run homer in the seventh, his fourth of the year, then Simon made it back-to-back smashing an 0-2 pitch to straight-away center. Simon added another solo shot in the ninth for his third of the series and of the season to put the Huskies up, 13-3.
Collin Cheney had a two-run double for ACU in the bottom of the ninth for the final tallies.
