BSB: Abilene Christian Rallies Past HBU, 4-3

Senior RF Matt Heck hits two-run home run

ABILENE, Texas – Abilene Christian broke through with two runs in the bottom of the ninth to salvage the Southland Conference series finale with a 4-3 win over HBU Sunday afternoon at Crutcher Scott Field.

Junior centerfielder Jonathan Ducoff went 1-for-3 and homered in all three games of the series for HBU (16-20, 9-6 SLC), while senior rightfielder Matt Heck had a two-run homer for the Huskies. Senior shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson and senior leftfielder Spencer Halloran each went 2-for-4, with Halloran scoring a run and senior first baseman Jake Pulcheon went 2-for-3.

Junior righthander Brady Batten took a no-decision, holding ACU (17-17, 4-14) to two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and six walks in eight innings. Heck (3-1) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in the ninth.

Caleb Kyle went 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run, while Dalton Dunn went 2-for-4 and drove in the winning run for the Wildcats.

Brennan Lewis (2-0) earned the win, holding HBU scoreless on one hit over the final three innings. Starter Jonathan Nicholson gave up three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in six innings.

ACU got on the board in the bottom of the second when Riley Donahue led off with a walk and later scored on Seth Watts' RBI single.

Heck ripped a two-run, opposite field blast to right to put the Huskies ahead, 2-1, then Ducoff added a solo shot to left in the fifth for a 3-1 advantage. Heck tied Halloran for the conference lead with his eighth of the season, while Ducoff hit his fifth and homered in all three games of the series.

Kyle delivered an RBI double to center in the seventh to cut HBU's lead to one, then singled with one out in the ninth to start the Wildcats' rally. Derek Scott and Koby Clayborn followed with singles, with Clayborn driving in Kyle to tie the game, 3-3. After Donahue was intentionally walked to load the bases, Dunn lifted a sacrifice fly to center to end the game.

HBU returns to action when it faces McNeese in a non-conference contest Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The Legacy Sports Network audio broadcast with Russ Reneau begins at 5:50 with the pregame show and is available on HBUHuskies.com.
