The 7 Dawgs Blogs is an in-depth look inside the 2015-16 HBU women's basketball freshman class. Below is the eighth installment of the weekly summer series.
Monday, July 27 – Charlotte Hodges, 6'0" Forward, Kingwood, Texas Today the team had weights at 10am and it's leg day! Since I'm still doing rehab, I had my PT appointment at 10 as well. I ran for 20 minutes on the anti-gravity treadmill and it felt great! Mondays are freshmen "check-in" with Coach which means we talk about how we are doing in class and workouts, and it's just a great time to catch up! After I talked with Coach Donna, I went back to my apartment, cooked lunch and took a nap. For my online class I had to submit my homework and once I finished that I caught up on some much needed Netflix time. Later on Amanda and I went to mass at St. Michael's for praise and worship, fellowship, and a yummy dinner! It was a fabulous start to this week! It's hard to believe this is the 2nd to last Monday of summer school.
Tuesday, July 28 – Brooklyn Moore, 5'11" Wing, Murphy, Texas Today was pretty interesting but also fun! Some of the other freshmen and I had our midterm test in our Old Testament class, and I can definitely say that we were all pretty nervous. But I think we did just fine. Later in the day we had practice, but we had to use another school's gym because there was a scheduling conflict with ours. The floor was slippery, which made practice more difficult; I'll be glad when we're back in our own gym next week!
Wednesday, July 29 – Bria Johnson, 5'6" Point Guard, Sunnyvale, Texas On this beautiful Wednesday, the team had a change of scenery for our conditioning workout. We went to the soccer fields and completed a crossfit circuit. After our class and a little snack, a couple of my roommates gathered around to watch film of the plays we are currently learning. We asked the coaches for film of these plays against opponents and some with no defense so we can visualize the reads and looks they want us to recognize. It's great having technology available and I can't wait to watch myself on film later on in my career!
Thursday, July 30 – Amanda Johnson, 6'1" Wing, Georgetown, Texas We didn't have a lot on our schedules today; we had weights in the morning and some of us had class in the afternoon. I took advantage of this extra free time and got ahead on some of my class work. Later in the afternoon, Bria, Veronika and I went to the store to stock up on groceries before our last week of the summer session. After we got back, I decided to be a little artistic and painted a picture of Kiza, our live husky mascot! The rest of the evening was full of relaxing, listening to music, and doing some cooking. Needless to say, it was a very productive day!
Friday, July 31 – Adriiana Jackson, 5'1" Point Guard, Houston, TexasToday was a really long day! I had a chance to walk through some of our offense with our seniors who explained some more of the reads to us. Coach had got on us a little on Tuesday that we had to focus on work off the floor as well as on it, so we decided as a group to go in and make sure we were all up to speed with everything we have done so far. Hopefully next week she won't need to yell at us :)
I am really anxious for this weekend to come as we have a recruit coming on campus on her official visit and we are looking forward to meeting her and getting to know her better!
Saturday, Aug. 1 – Veronika Kirienko, 6'4" Center, Tashkent, UzbekistanToday was a GREAT day! Seven of us decided to go to the beach this morning in Galveston. I was very excited as I have never been in the ocean before so it was incredible. After we had been at the beach we went to a café and ate sea food. We do not have that variety of sea food in Uzbekistan. I tried catfish and shrimp and it was great. It was one of the most memorable days for me since arriving in the USA. Despite the fact I probably should have used more sun lotion……BUT I have so many positive memories of today with my teammates that I will never forget!
Sunday, Aug. 2 – Kennedy Collins, 6'1" Center, Bastrop, TexasThis morning we played pick up then most of us decided to go to the zoo. We saw lions, tigers, bears and gorillas. Well…technically we didn't see too many of them as they were burrowed away inside because it was so hot! But we did see elephants, seals, giraffes and ostriches. Did you know that an ostrich brain is the size of their eyeball? Yeah, me either until Veronika told me. She was so amused by their tiny little heads on their body, she couldn't stop laughing! It was really funny. To finish the day, we spent time with our recruit watching movies and hanging at the apartments where we laughed. A LOT!
