Arkansas State Takes Two From Baseball

Senior 3B Curtis Jones goes 3-for-6 in doubleheader for Huskies.

HOUSTON – Arkansas State claimed a 13-2 victory in the first game, then held HBU off for a 2-1 win in the second game to sweep the doubleheader and the three-game non-conference baseball series Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.
 
In the second game, senior third baseman Curtis Jones went 2-for-4, while junior second baseman Greg Espinosa singled and scored. Junior rightfielder Austin Saenz doubled for the Huskies (5-6).
 
Senior Brandon Hammerly (1-2) took the loss for HBU, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits in five innings. Junior Andrew Alvarez and senior Josh Martinez each worked two scoreless innings.
 
Ty White went 2-for-5 and scored a run for the Red Wolves (7-3), while Jeremy Brown homered and Joe Schrimpf had the other RBI.
 
Tyler Zuber (2-0) picked up the win for ASU, shutting the Huskies out on four hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Coulton Lee earned his first save, giving up an unearned run on two hits in three innings.
 
In the first game, Jones went 1-for-2 with a run for the Huskies, and senior centerfielder Zach Nehrir went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs.
 
Junior Matthew McCollough (2-1) took the loss, allowing nine runs on seven hits in two innings. Senior Ross Kennell shut ASU out on one hit in five innings of relief.
 
Schrimpf went 1-for-3 with a grand slam and totaled five RBIs on the day, while Brown went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored three times. Lucas Feddersen drove in a run and scored three, and Tanner Ring went 2-for-5 with a home run. White drove in a pair of runs for ASU.
 
Joe Glidewell (1-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in six innings. Three pitchers combined to hold the Huskies scoreless over the final three innings.
 
The Huskies return to action against third-ranked Houston Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Cougar Field, before returning home to host McNeese State in the Southland Conference opening series Friday through Sunday at Husky Field.
