Baseball Edges Nicholls in 15 to Split DH

Huskies salvage series finale with 7-5 win.

THIBODAUX, La. – HBU was held scoreless for 10-straight innings, but managed to plate two runs in the 15th to outlast Nicholls and earn a split of Saturday's Southland Conference doubleheader at Ray E. Didier Field. The Colonels rallied past the Huskies in the first game, 5-3.

In the second game, junior infielder Clayton Vaughn went 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs, while junior second baseman Josh Martinez went 4-for-7 with a double and scored twice. Junior catcher Samm Wiggins went 3-for-4 and scored a run, and senior shortstop CJ Jarvis went 3-for-7 with three RBIs.

Sophomore Dylan Zarosky (1-0) got the win for the Huskies (9-7, 1-2 SLC), tossing three scoreless innings. Chris Garza earned his second save of the year with a perfect 15th. Junior starter Curtis Jones took a no-decision, allowing three runs, only one earned, and striking out four in eight innings.

Leo Vargas went 3-for-5 and scored a run, while Charles Morton went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Nicholls. Keith Cormier drove in two runs for the Colonels (10-10, 2-1).

Nicholls used nine pitchers as starter Ryan Deemes allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings. Jason McDonald (0-2) took the loss, despite being solid for four innings, before running into trouble in the 15th.

The Colonels took an early lead with two unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Vargas singled and Duplantis reached on an error, then both runners scored when Cormier reached on a fielder's choice.

Vaughn singled and junior rightfielder Thomas Clay doubled to lead off the top of the third, then Jarvis plated the Huskies' first run with a groundout.

HBU broke through with four runs in the first to take the lead. Wiggins, Martinez and senior Jordan McCoy led off with singles to load the bases, then Vaughn tied the game with a single through the right side. The Huskies took the lead when Clay was hit by a pitch, then Jarvis delivered an RBI and another run came home when Jones grounded into a double play to make the score 5-2.

Nicholls got a double from Marc Frazier, followed by a triple from Morton to cut HBU's lead to 5-3.

The Colonels rallied in the ninth when Morton slapped a one-out single to right and David Zorn reached on a Huskies error. Justin Smith came through with an RBI single to make it a one-run game. After Seth Stevens struck out for the second out, Lyons tied the game with an RBI single. Vargas walked to load the bases, but Martinez struck out Duplantis after he fouled off five-straight pitches with a 1-2 count.

In the 10th, Wiggins led off with a single and was retired when Martinez reached on a fielder's choice. McCoy followed with a double to left, but Martinez was thrown out at the plate. Vaughn singled, but McCoy had to be held up at third, then Clay struck out.

Martinez led off the 15th with a single, then pinch hitter, sophomore Nathan Schwertner ripped an RBI double to leftcenter. For good measure, Jarvis brought Schwertner home with an RBI single to left.

In the first game, Nicholls scored three runs in the seventh inning to push past HBU for a 5-3 win.

Jarvis, Clay and Martinez each had two hits for the Huskies. Clay drove in two runs, Martinez scored twice, and Jarvis had a double and an RBI.

Senior Ryan Lower (2-1) took the loss for HBU, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits and striking out six in six innings. It was Lower's first loss in 11-straight starts.

Vargas went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored, while Duplantis had two RBIs for Nicholls. Morton doubled, drove in a run and scored for the Colonels.

Grant Borne (3-1) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out six in seven innings, then Stuart Holmes earned his first save by holding the Huskies hitless over the final two innings.

Nicholls scored in the bottom of the first when Vargas tripled and came home on a groundout by Duplantis. HBU tied it in the top of the third when Martinez led off with a single, went to second on a passed ball, then scored after back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Hebert and Clay.

The Huskies got a pair in the seventh on an RBI single by Clay and a squeeze bunt by Jarvis to lead 3-2, but the Colonels answered back with three in the bottom of the frame on an RBI doubled by Morton, an RBI single by Smith, and Zorn scored on a wild pitch.

The Huskies return to action when they face Baylor Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.
