HOUSTON – Northeastern took advantage of three HBU errors, then pushed across three runs in the top of the 10
th to hand HBU its first loss of the season in the non-conference baseball series opener Friday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior first baseman
Bradley Brown was 2-for-2 with a home run and drove in all four runs for HBU (4-1). Junior third baseman
Curtis Jones went 2-for-6, extending his hitting streak to 13 games dating back to last season. Junior leftfielder
Thomas Clay, junior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir and junior second baseman
Josh Martinez each had two hits. Clay stole a pair of bases, while Nehrir and Martinez both doubled.
Michael Foster went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs for Northeastern (1-3). Jason Vosler was 3-for-5 with a double, Gabe Levanti was 2-for-5 with a double, and Josh Treff went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Brad Burcroff drove in a pair of runs and Shane Allen scored twice.
Senior righthander
Ryan Lower took a no-decision, allowing four runs, but only one earned, on nine hits and struck out six without a walk in five innings for HBU. Sophomore lefthander
Matthew McCollough tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out four. Junior
Chris Garza (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits.
Nick Berger received a no-decision for Northeastern, allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings. Dustin Hunt allowed a pair of hits in four scoreless innings of work, while Foster (1-0) worked the final two innings to get the victory.
Foster reached on a dropped fly ball in the first and scored on an RBI single by Connor Lyons to give Northeastern the lead, but HBU answered back when Clay led off with a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Brown.
In the top of the second, Allen and Levanti got back-to-back singles, then Foster delivered an RBI single to put Northeastern ahead, 2-1.
Jarvis walked, then Jones slapped a hit-and-run single through the right side, before Brown unloaded a three-run blast that put HBU ahead, 4-2. It would be the last time HBU would cross the plate.
Allen reached on an error to lead off the fourth and scored on a Foster RBI single, then Burcroff reached on an error to lead off the fifth and scored on a single by Treff to tie the game, 4-4.
In the 10
th, Levanti doubled with one, Sean Lyons walked, and Foster singled to load the bases. Vosler walked to plate the go-ahead run, then Burcroff's two-out, two-run single to left gave Northeastern a three-run lead.
The series concludes with a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. at Husky Field.
