BSB: UIW Takes Both Ends of DH Over Huskies

Senior RF Brandon Bena, homers, doubles

SAN ANTONIO – UIW came back from a one-run deficit to score five unanswered runs and claim game one, 9-4, then held off HBU, 5-4, in game two of a Southland Conference baseball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Daniel Sullivan Field.
 
Senior righthfielder Brandon Bena went 2-for-3 with a home run, while sophomore catcher Dawson Woods went 2-for-2 with a walk, an RBI and scored a run for the Huskies. Senor leftfielder Lane Botkin went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored a run.
 
Sophomore righthander Morris Austin (3-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits in one inning. Sophomore starter Jared Burch allowed four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and four walks in 3.2 innings.
 
Grant Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and scored a run and Jordan McFarland went 2-for-4 with two triples and scored twice. Chance Medina was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored a run. Ryan Flores and Ridge Rogers each drove in two runs.
 
Aaron Celestino (1-1) earned the win, shutting the Huskies out on no hits in 2.1 innings of relief. Starter Drew Minter allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits in 2.2 innings.
 
In game two, sophomore first baseman Brennen Bales was 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run, with Bena adding a double, an RBI and a run. Freshman shortstop Sebastian Trinidad went 2-for-4 with a double and senior third baseman Nathan Soriano was 3-for-4 with a run.
 
Senior righthander Jacob Coats (2-7) took the loss, allowing five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks in seven innings for HBU.
 
Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and scored a run and Lee Thomas was 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two RBIs and scored a run.
 
Kayden Cassidy (2-2) picked up the victory, allowing two runs, one earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Michael Garza notched his fourth save, shutting HBU out on three hits over the final two innings.
 
The series continues with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch Saturday, followed by a 1 p.m. start for Sunday's finale.
