BSB: Huskes Roll Past Prairie View A&M, 21-5

Anthony Jones, Chase Talbot each homer twice

HOUSTON - HBU senior leftfielder Anthony Jones and junior centerfielder Chase Talbot hit two home runs each and a six-run fifth inning propelled the Huskies to a 21-5 rout of Prairie View A&M in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.

Jones went 3-for-4 with an inside-the-park solo home run, a two-run shot, a double, four RBIs and three runs, while Talbot went 3-for-6 with two solo blasts, two RBIs and two runs for HBU (5-11), which snapped a nine-game skid. Sophomore catcher Jeremy Simon went 4-for-6 with a double, five RBIs and scored twice.

Junior first baseman Johnny Gonzales was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and scored four times and sophomore second baseman Hayden Baker went 2-for-6 with two doubles, four RBIs and a pair of runs. Junior shortstop Cal Clark doubled and drove in three runs, while junior outfielder Ryne Edmondson singled and scored twice and junior designated hitter Matt Solomon doubled, drove in a run and scored three times.

Junior righthander Cody Collins (1-0) picked up his first win at HBU, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk in two innings. Senior lefthander Taylor Franzman started and allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and a walk in four innings. Junior Solomon Klimeck and freshmen Chris Burns and Jared Cruz combined to hold the Panthers (4-12) to one run on two hits over the final three innings.

Kellen Rogers went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run, while Alex Martinez went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs for PVAMU. Calvin Rucker doubled and drove in a pair.

Caleb Rozypal (0-1) took the loss, giving up 10 runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 4.1 innings.

Rogers tripled and scored on a Martinez single in the top of the first, but Talbot led off the bottom half with a solo shot that barely stayed fair down the rightfield line to tie the game. Gonzales followed with a triple and scored on a wild pitch to give the Huskies the lead.

Talbot led off the third with a no-doubter to right to extend HBU's lead to 3-1, but Rucker delivered a two-run double in the fourth to tie the game. Jones put the Huskies back on top with a solo inside-the-park homer in the fourth, but Rogers tied it again with an RBI double.

The Huskies broke the game open with six runs in the fifth when they loaded the bases with no outs and Baker cleared them with double to leftcenter. Simon drove in a run with a single and Jones followed with a two-run blast to left to make the score 10-4.

HBU added four two-run in the sixth, as Simon came through with a two-run single, Jones ripped an RBI double to left and junior third baseman Trent Franson capped the rally with an RBI single to right.

The Huskies scored four more in the seventh on RBI groundout by Baker and a sacrifice fly by Clark. Simon stroked another two run single up the middle, pushing the advantage to 18-4. Solomon's RBI double and Clark's two-run double in the eighth provided the final margin of 21-5.

The Huskies return to Southland Conference play, facing Stephen F. Austin in a three-game series Friday through Sunday in Nacogdoches, Texas.
