BEAUMONT, Texas – HBU exploded for six runs in the third and senior righthander
Ryan Lower held Lamar in check as the Huskies went on to a 7-3 victory over the Cardinals to even the Southland Conference baseball Saturday afternoon at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Senior first baseman
Bradley Brown went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, while junior third baseman
Curtis Jones went 3-for-5 with a run for the Huskies (21-22, 10-13 SLC). Senior leftfielder
Jordan McCoy was 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs, and a run, and senior shortstop
CJ Jarvis went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run to extend his hitting streak to 13 games.
Lower (6-2) allowed three runs on nine hits, while striking out three and walking one in seven innings to get the win for HBU, then senior
Kobie Hajdik pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, before sophomore
Dylan Zarosky got the final two outs to post his sixth save of the season. Lower moved into a tie for 10
th in all-time wins at HBU with 16 and moved into eighth place in strikeouts, while Zarosky's save total is the third-most in a single season in HBU history.
Justin Eckols went 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Jude Vidrine went 2-for-5 with an RBI for Lamar (28-19, 13-10). Reed Seeley homered, while Jacoby Middleton had a double for the Cardinals. Sam Bumpers was held to a single and a walk in five at-bats.
Chase Angelle (4-5) took the loss for the Cardinals, allowing six runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings. Hunter Perry and Brandon Kirkham combined to hold the Huskies to one run on five hits in 6.1 innings.
Seeley got the Cardinals on the board with a solo home run to leftcenter in the bottom of the first. Eckols singled, then scored on an RBI single by Vidrine in the second to give Lamar a 2-0 lead.
Brown led off the top of the third for the Huskies with a towering home run to left center on the first pitch he saw. Hebert fell behind in the count 0-2, but drew a walk, stole second and scored on a single to right by Jarvis to tie the game. Jones and junior catcher
Samm Wiggins singled, then McCoy ripped a two-run double into the leftfield corner. Junior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir reached on an infield single, then the Huskies pulled off a double steal for another run. After junior second baseman
Josh Martinez drew a walk, Brown delivered an RBI single to center for his second RBI of the inning to put HBU ahead 6-2.
Jarvis walked to lead off the fourth, then Jones singled on a hit-and-run and went to second on a wild pitch to put both runners in scoring position. Wiggins hit a high chopper to third, but the throw home was high, allowing Jarvis to score to extend the Huskies' lead to 7-2.
Eckols and Vidrine singled, then Seeley drew a walk to load the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Lower got Bumpers to fly out to right to end the threat. Lamar did pick up a run in the fifth when Kyle Markum came through with a two-out RBI single to center to bring home Brandon Provost, who had also singled.
The series concludes Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
