HOUSTON – HBU racked up 10 hits against 14th-ranked Rice, but could not cash in as the Owls claimed a 6-1 victory over the Huskies in non-conference baseball Wednesday night at Reckling Park.

Junior third baseman Curtis Jones went 2-for-5 with a run, while junior rightfielder Thomas Clay also went 2-for-5 for HBU (22-23). Senior leftfielder Jordan McCoy drove in the Huskies' lone run.

Connor Tekyl went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Keenan Cook went 2-for-5 with a run for Rice (31-15). Skylar Ewing was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored, while Michael Aquino went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run.

Junior Ross Kennell (2-5) gave a solid effort on the mound for HBU, going 7.1 innings.

Chase McDowell (4-4) picked up the win for Rice, giving up one run on eight hits in 6.2 innings, and helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-4.

Cook led off the bottom of the first with an infield single, then Warren's chopper found its way into right to put runners on the corners. Hoelscher's check swing groundout to Kennell plated the first run of the game and forced out Warren at second, putting Rice ahead, 1-0.

The Owls added two more in the fourth on RBI singles from Aquino and Teykl.

Jones led off the fifth with a single for HBU and went to third when junior Samm Wiggins followed with a hit-and-run single into right to put runners on the corners with no outs. McCoy got the Huskies on the board with an RBI single to cut the Owls' lead to 3-1, but HBU was unable to capitalize further.

Rice got the run back when Ewing hit a solo home run to left in the bottom of the sixth, then added a pair in the eighth.

The Huskies have six games remaining as they host Sam Houston State this weekend, followed Stephen F. Austin next week, in three-game Southland Conference series at Husky Field to wrap up the regular season.
