HOUSTON – HBU rode a five-run sixth inning to a 9-2 victory in the first game, then completed the sweep of the Southland Conference doubleheader against New Orleans thanks to a five-run eighth for a 6-1 win in the second game Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.

In the first game, senior shortstop CJ Jarvis went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs, extending his streak to seven-straight multiple hit games for the Huskies (11-9, 3-3 SLC). Senior first baseman Bradley Brown went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a run, while junior third baseman Curtis Jones went 3-for-4 and scored three times. Senior catcher Jordan Hebert doubled and drove in three, while junior designated hitter Samm Wiggins went 2-for-4 with a double, and RBI and a run.

Senior righthander Ryan Lower (3-1) notched the win, allowing two runs on nine hits, with three strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Junior Chris Garza posted his team-leading third save by working three scoreless innings, allowing a hit and striking out two.

Jonathan Coco went 3-for-4, while Hezekiah Randolph went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Privateers (6-13, 1-4). Reese Kanter went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Chaz Boyer was 2-for-4.

Darron McKigney (0-4) took the loss for UNO, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings.

HBU took the early led when Brown led off the second with a single to centerfield, then eventually scored on an Hebert sacrifice fly. UNO answered in the third when Capielano doubled with two outs and no one on, then went to third on a balk. Liberto was hit by a pitch, and Kanter slapped an RBI single to leftcenter. Randolph followed with a single to give the Privateers a 2-1 lead.

Jarvis and Jones had back-to-back singles with two outs in the fifth, then Brown lifted a two run doubled down the rightfield line to take the lead back for the Huskies.

The Huskies broke the game open with five runs in the sixth. Hebert delivered an RBI double and junior rightfielder Thomas Clay had a sacrifice fly. Jarvis, Brown and Wiggins each had RBI singles. Hebert drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth for HBU's final tally.

In the second game, senior leftfielder Jordan McCoy went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs, while junior rightfielder Thomas Clay went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Wiggins tripled and scored, and junior second baseman Josh Martinez singled, had an RBI and a run. Jarvis' hit streak and multi-hit game streak came to an end at seven as he went 0-for-5.

Sophomore Dylan Zarosky (2-0) got the win in relief for HBU, pitching 1.1 perfect innings. Jones took a no-decision for the Huskies, despite allowing only an unearned run on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk in 7.2 innings.

Zach Liberto went 2-for-4 for UNO, while Randolph singled and scored, and Jonathan Santana drove in the Privateers' run.

Seth Laigast (1-1) was hung with the loss, giving up three runs on a hit in one inning. UNO starter Nick Halliday allowed one run on five hits in 6.1 innings.

UNO broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Randolph was hit by a pitch and with the aid of an HBU error, later scored on a sacrifice fly by Santana.

HBU knotted it up in the seventh as McCoy singled to center, Martinez walked, then Clay came through with an RBI single to left.

Jones led off the eighth when he was hit by a pitch on the ninth pitch of the at-bat. Brown laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached safely as the pitcher was unsuccessful in forcing Jones out a second. Wiggins walked, then the Huskies scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. McCoy was intentionally walked to load the bases once again, then Martinez drove in a run with an infield single deep in the hole at short, and Clay's comebacker ricocheted far enough off the pitcher to drive in a run and the only play was to first. Zarosky had to hit for himself when Jones came off the mound and went to third, and he hit a chopper to short, but the throw pulled the first baseman off the bag and allowed both runners to score, putting the Huskies ahead, 6-1.

HBU returns to action against crosstown rival Texas Southern Tuesday at 3 p.m. at McGregor Park, before facing Southeastern Louisiana in a three-game conference series March 28-30 in Hammond, La.
