HBU Baseball Falls in Pair of 4-3 Decisions to McNeese State

LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese State held on for a pair of 4-3 victories over Houston Baptist in a doubleheader to sweep the series Sunday at Cowboy Diamond.

 

Junior third baseman Robbie Buller doubled twice, hit his sixth home run of the season, drove in three and scored three runs on the day for the Huskies (0-12). Senior first baseman Beau Warren also recorded three hits on the day.

 

In the first game, HBU tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the sixth, but McNeese State answered with the winning run in the bottom half. Buller went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.

 

Blake Ellender went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Seth Granger drove in a pair for the Cowboys (7-6).

 

Phillip Parcell (2-0) earned the win for McNeese State, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits and struck out four in six innings, and Jordan LeGros picked up the save with a perfect seventh. Sophomore Scott Moore (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on three hits, while senior lefthander Jamie Storey did not factor into the decision after allowing three runs on four hits in 4.1 innings.

 

HBU scored a run in the top of the first as junior leftfielder David Pfuntner led off the game with a single and scored on Buller's double, but McNeese State answered with a run in the bottom half as Ellender led off with a double and scored on Granger's groundout.

 

The Huskies took the lead in the top of the fourth as Buller led off with another double and scored on junior rightfielder Kolby Arnst's single. In the bottom of the fifth, Jace Peterson singled with one out, Lee Orr walked and both runners stole bases to move into scoring position. Peterson scored on an error and Granger plated Orr with an single to give the Cowboys a 3-2 lead.

 

HBU tied the game in the sixth as Buller reached on an error and scored on single by sophomore centerfielder Jake Gonzalez, but Andrew Lalumander was hit by a pitch to lead of the bottom half, Josh LeBert pinch ran and scored on Orr's double for the deciding tally.

 

In the second game, senior Chase Hernandez went 2-for-3, Warren went 2-for-4, while Buller homered and drove in two and junior rightfielder Luke Clements scored a pair of runs for HBU.

 

Orr went 2-for-4 with a triple, and Renny Weber went 2-for-3 with a run scored for McNeese State.

 

Matt Click (1-0) earned the victory for the Cowboys, allowing three runs on nine hit and striking out eight in seven innings, while LeGros earned his second save of the day and fourth of the season with another perfect inning. Junior righthander Dalton Schafer (0-4) went the distance for the Huskies, allowing four runs on nine hits in eight innings.

 

The Huskies once again scored in the top of the first as Pfuntner led off the game with a single and scored on a Hernandez single. In the third, Peterson reached on a two-out single and scored on Orr's triple and Orr scored on Granger's double.

 

McNeese State scored two more in the fourth as Weber singled and scored on Shea Daly's double. Daly then scored on an Ellender single to give the Cowboys a 4-1 lead. The Huskies answered in the fifth as Clements singled and Buller blasted a two run homer to make the score 4-3.

 

HBU threatened in the seventh as freshman Garrett Tully doubled with one out but was stranded at third, and again in the eighth as Buller led off with a walk and Hernandez sacrificed him to get him to second. Gonzalez singled to put runners on the corners, then stole second, but Warren hit into a double play to end the inning.

 
The Huskies return to action when they hit the road to face Stephen F. Austin Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Nacogdoches, Texas.
