SB: Grofman named SLC Pitcher of the Week

Senior from Kingwood becomes second HCU pitcher, third Husky overall to claim league's weekly accolade

Houston Christian University's Ronni Grofman has been named the Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for her efforts over the span of April 22-28. It is the first career weekly honor for Grofman, who tossed her first no-hitter as a Husky in her only outing of the week.

Appearing for the final time in the circle at Husky Field on Friday evening in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, Grofman shut down Northwestern State in a most efficient manner. She would get two runs of support in the first frame and made it stand up the rest of the way, facing just three batters over the minimum.

After issuing a leadoff walk in the first, the senior from Kingwood set down 11 in a row before a two-out free pass in the fourth. She issued only one more walk, that coming in the sixth.

Grofman needed just 81 pitches in 81 minutes to log the 33rd no-hitter in program history. She fanned two, and got 13 flyouts and six groundouts in the economical outing that pushed her record to 6-9 on the year.

The no-no was her team-high third shutout of the season, lowering her ERA to 3.19 on the season. She has 60 strikeouts in 83.1 innings pitched and leads the team with 14 games started and nine complete games.

Her no-hitter was part of an outstanding final performance at Husky Field by each of the senior hurlers over the weekend to help clinch a berth in the 2024 Southland Conference Tournament.

Grofman followed up Lyndie Swanson's 6-2 win in the opener, and Katy Janes capped off the weekend with a two-hit shutout in the Saturday "Senior Day" finale. The trio limited Northwestern State to just nine total hits and two runs in the three-game sweep. The series ended with 18 straight scoreless innings pitched by the three, and also included a stretch of 11.2 hitless innings from the sixth inning of the opener to the fourth inning of the finale.

It is the second Pitcher of the Week honor in the last three weeks for HCU, as Lyndie Swanson was tabbed on April 15. The pair of pitchers join Jasie Roberts, who was selected as Hitter of the Week after the second week of the campaign, as SLC honorees this season.

Houston Christian University returns to action later this week, traveling north for the final regular season series of 2024 when it takes on Texas A&M-Commerce. The series was bumped up to begin on Thursday with a doubleheader and a Friday finale to accommodate HCU's participation in Spring Commencement this coming Saturday.
