SB: Swanson captures SLC Pitcher of the Week honors

Stellar weekend by senior hurler from Katy helped HCU to first conference series victory of season

Houston Christian University's Lyndie Swanson has been named the Jersey Mike's Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week for her efforts over the span of April 8-14. It is the first career weekly honor for Swanson, who had a brilliant couple of outings in the circle to help HCU take two of three from Nicholls over the wekeend, earning its first conference series win of the season.

The senior from Katy tossed her 14th career shutout on Friday in the series opener as she gave up just six hits and struck out eight as HCU won 4-0. Nicholls would then go on to win the nightcap 7-1, sending the teams to a rubber game.

Swanson was even better in the series finale on Saturday, powering through 10 innings and 121 pitches. She was in control throughout, facing 40 batters and putting down 13 by flyout and 14 by groundout with three strikeouts. She scattered seven hits and allowed just the one run to hold off Nicholls until Haylie Savage's walk-off grand slam ended the 5-1 thriller.

For the series, Swanson was dominant. She went 17 total innings and tossed 206 pitches in the two games, striking out 11 and walking just three. She allowed 13 hits, only one of which went for extra bases. The Huskies and Colonels have now played extra frames in three of the last six meetings.

Now in her fifth and final season, Swanson has been hitting career marks all throughout the campaign. She became just the ninth hurler in school history to reach the 400-inning plateau, and needs just three more to take over sixth place. Her two outings this weekend pushed her to 110 for her career, just five shy of the top-spot all-time.

Having won nine games each of the last three seasons, she now stands at 36 for her career, two shy of the Top 10. She had 11 K's over the weekend to pull her within 11 of the top 10 there as well. A save over Kansas City in February tied her for the top spot all-time, and her shutout on Friday moved her into seventh place all-time.

Swanson is now 6-6 on the season, and the strong weekend lowered her ERA to 2.92 which leads the team. She has fanned 64 in 84 total innings. The Huskies are now 17-20 overall and 4-11 in the Southland.

Houston Christian University returns to action on Tuesday for its final non-conference matchup of the campaign, as it takes on former Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State University. The Bearkats are currently 16-25 overall and 5-13 in Conference USA play after dropping two of three at UTEP over the weekend.

The visitors from Huntsville lead the all-time series with the Huskies 36-10, with the two teams splitting a pair of meetings in 2023. The Kats took a 9-4 decision in the University of Houston Tournament and HCU returned the favor by winning at Sam, 7-2 in 10 innings.

First pitch at Husky Field is set for 5 pm.
