SB: Late rally on "Senior Day" sends Head Coach Mary-Ellen Hall out in style

Moreno homer, senior hit parade lead three-run sixth that breaks open tie, ends season on high note

HOUSTON --- A three-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning broke open a tie ballgame and Houston Christian University went on to capture a 6-3 "Senior Day" victory over Lamar University in the season finale on Saturday afternoon at Husky Field. The rally was started with a monstrous Jade Moreno homer and highlighted by a senior hit-parade in the middle of the inning that would ultimately send Head Coach Mary-Ellen Hall out with a win in the final game of her illustrious 35-year career at the helm of her alma mater.

After two scoreless frames to open the contest, the visitors from Spindletop pushed across three runs in the third inning. A Roxy Thompson double to deep left scored Riley Whitley with the game's first tally. Thompson then scored on an Isabella Flores bloop single down the right-field line, and she came home from second base when Ariel Flores singled through the right side, giving Lamar a 3-0 advantage.

HCU came right back in the bottom half with two runs of its own. Madison Dominguez walked, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball before Maddy Bailey walked to put runners on the corners.

Breana Herrera then lofted a soft flare to foul territory behind first base, just deep enough that Dominguez scurried home with the first run for HCU. One out later, Karlie Barba singled up the middle to score Bailey and cut the Lamar lead to just one.

The Huskies would knot things up in the fourth. Raenna Liscano greeted a pitching change with a leadoff single up the middle, and then came all the way around to score when a throwing error on a fielder's choice by Jade Moreno ended up all the way on the right field wall.

In the sixth, HCU put together its game-deciding rally. With one out, Jade Moreno began the burst with a mammoth homer to deep center, giving the Huskies their first lead of the day.

That homer, Moreno's sixth, was the first of five straight hits for the Huskies. Leah Hammack kept things going when she earned a knock by beating the rap at first base on an infield single.

It was then time for a little "Senior Day" uprising, as the next three hitters, all seniors, passed the baton. Maddy Bailey singled to right center to put runners on the corners, bringing up Breana Herrera who deposited a single into right center to score Hammack for a 5-3 lead.

Chloe Foster then got in on the act, as her tailing liner to the right field corner glanced off the glove of the rightfielder and drove in Bailey to double HCU's margin, 6-3.

Cara Pitman worked through a two-on, no-out jam in the top of the seventh, getting a pop-up, groundout and strikeout to squelch any last ditch hopes of a comeback for the visitors.

HCU pounded out 10 hits, led by Karlie Barba who went 2-4 with an RBI. Jade Moreno was 1-3 with her sixth dinger of the season, while Breana Herrera went 1-3 with two RBI and Maddy Bailey was 1-3 with two runs scored.

Pitman, the final of three hurlers used by the Huskies, went three scoreless innings allowing just a lone hit with one walk and one strikeout to earn her fourth victory of the season.

Riley Whitley went 3-3 to lead Lamar (30-22, 16-11 SLC). Roxy Thompson, Isabella Flores and Ariel Flores each drove in a run. Madison Guidry (2-6) took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.

HCU ends its season 11-36 overall and 8-19 in the Southland. The victory came as the Huskies honored their six out-going student-athletes (Breana Herrera, Maddy Bailey, Addy Prasifka, Chloe Foster, Karlie Barba and Christin Haygood) after the game.

It was the final contest for Head Coach Mary-Ellen Hall, fittingly at Husky Field. Hall finishes a tremendous career at her alma mater with 933 victories all- told over 35 years. She will remain in her capacity of Senior Woman Administrator, a role she has held since 2009.
