SB: Grofman no-hitter caps doubleheader sweep of Demons

HCU takes first two of series; "Senior Day" finale on Saturday

HOUSTON, Texas --- Ronni Grofman spun her first career no-hitter to win game two and cap off a twi-night doubleheader sweep for Houston Christian University over Northwestern State University on Friday evening. Lyndie Swanson got the Huskies started by winning the opener before Grofman pitched the 33rd no-hitter in school history, giving HCU a much-needed pair of victories.

HCU improves to 19-24 on the season but more importantly 6-14 in the Southland, pushing two games ahead of Northwestern State which falls to 17-29 overall and 4-16 in the league.

The two teams will finish up the series with a matinee finale on Saturday at 12:05 pm, the final home game of the campaign for HCU with "Senior Day" ceremonies to follow the contest.

GAME ONE : HCU 6, Northwestern State 2

HCU got on the board early, then broke the game open in the fifth inning to back a complete game effort from senior hurler Lyndie Swanson.

Consecutive one-out singles from Juls Garcia and Haylie Savage preceded a two-run double off the wall in right-center field by Jasie Roberts, giving HCU a 2-0 advantage. NSU would get those runs back in the third on RBI singles from Bailie Ragsdale and Tristin Court, knotting things up at two apiece. The inning might have been bigger had it not been for an earlier double play as Maddy Bailey notched her ninth assist on the season when she caught Taylor Williams liner to left and cut down Sophia Livers at the plate.

In the fourth, the Huskies took the lead without the benefit of a hit, as Kaicey Hagler reached on an error and moved to third a grounder to second base by Roberts led to a throwing error, putting runners on the corners. Maddy Bailey then reached on a fielders choice forcing Roberts at second allowing Hagler to score and push HCU in front 3-2.

HCU would put two more on the board in the fifth inning, as the Garcia's got things going. AB Garcia had a one-out infield single and was chased home by Juls Garcia, who's laced a ball that skipped through the left center gap and all the way to the wall. Juls Garcia would race all the way to third with a triple, and came in one batter later on a fly out to left by Haylie Savage.

The Huskies got one more in the sixth. Jasie Roberts singled to lead off and then stole second. Two outs later Heidi Maytum singled off the glove of pitcher Maggie Darr and when the ball kicked away, Roberts would come around to score on a throwing error for the final run of the game.

Swanson went the distance, allowing seven hits and the two runs while walking three and fanning three. The win evened her mark at 7-7 on the season, pulling her one victory from the Top 10 all-time. She now needs just four strikeouts to reach the Top 10 there as well, and two more appearances in the circle will grab the top spot on the all-time charts.

Jasie Roberts went 2-3 with two RBI for the Huskies to lead a nine-hit offense. Juls Garcia went 2-3 with an RBI and two runs scored as seven of the nine batters in the lineup had a hit.

Maggie Darr took the loss for the Lady Demons, falling to 6-14 on the season. Tristin Court went 2-3 with an RBI and Mia Liscano went 2-3 with a run scored.

GAME TWO : HCU 2, Northwestern State 0

If Friday evening ended up being Ronni Grofman's final time to take the circle at Husky FIeld ... what a way to go out.

Locked in a pitcher's duel from the start, the senior from Kingwood outdueled Northwestern State's Kenzie Seely to cap off the doubleheader sweep for the Huskies. Grofman needed just 81 pitches in the economical effort which lasted just 81 minutes and earned her the first no-hitter of her HCU career.

The Huskies got the only runs Grofman needed in their first swings of the game. AB Garcia singled to lead off the inning and then stole second with one out. After Haylie Savage walked, a double steal put runners at second and third for Kaicey Hagler, whose missile up the middle bounded off the second base bag and into short left center, scoring both runners.

From there, it was all Grofman, who set down 18 of the next 20 batters to improve to 6-9 on the season. She finished the contest with just three walks and two strikeouts in posting the 33rd no-hitter in school history, and first since Katy Janes no-no at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last March 16.

While the flowers went to Grofman, a tip of the cap is in order for Kenzie Seely of NSU, who allowed just three hits in a masterful game in her own right. She allowed two hits in the first frame and a single to Breana Herrera to lead off the second before racing through 15 of the next 16 batters. She falls to 8-13 on the season, walking two and getting five punchouts.
