SB: Janes tosses "Senior Day" gem to finish off series sweep of Northwestern State

Huskies limit Demons to nine hits and two runs in three games, clinch SLC Tournament berth

HOUSTON, Texas --- Katy Janes turned in a masterful two-hit shutout to help Houston Christian University to a 2-0 victory over Northwestern State University in the Saturday series finale at Husky Field. The victory capped a strong weekend by HCU's senior trio of pitchers, who allowed just nine hits and two runs in completing the series sweep that in the process clinched a berth in the Southland Conference Tournament.

The Huskies would get on the board first for the third straight game in the series. Jasie Roberts got the inning rolling with a leadoff double to left center, then advanced over to third base on a wild pitch. Ronni Grofman, who just the day before threw a no-hitter, drove in the only run Katy Janes ended up needing, as her groundout to second plated Roberts for the 1-0 HCU lead.

Janes set down the first nine Demons in order before giving up a leadoff single to Taylor Williams in the fourth. Laney Roos would then single through the right side, but Williams was gunned down at home by senior outfielder Riley Martin and help HCU get out of the inning unscathed. Janes would not allow another hit after the fourth, retiring the final nine in order.

HCU got one more for insurance in the bottom of the fourth, with Roberts getting things going once again by leading off with a single. She promptly stole second base and then moved to third on a flyout to right by Grofman. Tabitha Burnett then put down the perfect squeeze, with Roberts almost on home plate before a play could be made, giving HCU a 2-0 lead.

Janes improved to 5-4 with her complete game effort, striking out three with no walks. She capped a weekend in which all three senior hurlers earned victories while holding the visiting Demons to just nine hits total in the three games.

Lyndie Swanson won the opener on Friday, allowing just two runs before Grofman's no-no in the second game, as the pitching trio combined for an 18-inning scoreless streak to finish off the series.

Jasie Roberts led the way at the plate in her final contest at Husky Field, notching her first three-hit game of the season and fifth of her career. She went 3-3 with her ninth double of the year, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Juls Garcia went 2-3 while Tabitha Burnett and Ronni Grofman each had an RBI.

Taylor Williams and Laney Roos each went 1-3 for Northwestern State, now 17-30 overall and 4-17 in Southland play. Kenzie Seely, who was brilliant in opposition of Grofman's no-hitter on Friday evening, was solid once again, scattering seven hits and the two runs over five innings with three strikeouts in falling to 8-14 overall on the season.

HCU improves to 20-24 overall and 7-14 in the Southland. The Huskies have one regular season series remaining, as they will be on the road next week taking on Texas A&M-Commerce. The series has been shifted up a day to accommodate HCU Spring Commencement, as the two teams will now play a twin-bill on Thursday followed by the series finale on Friday evening.

The series sweep by the Huskies over NSU clinches a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament for the third straight season. The SLC Tournament will be hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana starting May 7.
