SB: Huskies split pair at Commerce

HCU and Lions play rubber game on Friday in regular season finale

COMMERCE, Texas --- Houston Christian University split a twin-bill with Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday evening at the John Cain Family Softball Complex. The Lions pushed across two runs in the sixth inning for a 3-1 win in the opener, before the Huskies came roaring back with a 7-4 victory in the eight-inning nightcap.

HCU is now 21-25 overall and 8-15 in the Southland Conference. The Huskies and Lions will wrap up the three-game series and the regular season slate with a rubber match on Friday evening at 5 pm.

GAME ONE :

HCU would open the scoring in the first frame. Haylie Savage walked to start the inning, and would steal second. After two quick outs, Jasie Roberts snuck a bloop single over the first base bag and inside the right field line to bring home Savage for the 1-0 lead.

Commerce got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by Ashley Diaz. The two teams would then trade scoreless frames until the sixth, when TAMUC pushed across two. Diamond Sefe singled through the right side, bringing in pinch-runner Emma Olsen, and Emmie Miehe also scored on a bobble in right field, giving the host Lions a 3-1 lead.

That was all that Julia Sanchez needed to earn her sixth victory of the season. She went the distance and allowed just two HCU hits, both by Jasie Roberts, while walking three and fanning eight.

Addy Prasifka (1-2) took the loss in relief, giving up two hits and two runs in two innings of work. Ronni Grofman worked the first four innings, giving up five hits and one run with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO :

The Huskies put runs up in the first two innings to start the back-end of the doubleheader. In the first inning, Jackie Jessup singled to center to score Jasie Roberts to open the scoring.

In the next stanza, Juls Garcia lined a one-out triple to the left field corner. Haylie Savage then reached on an error that allowed Garcia to score. A single by Roberts put two on, and one out later, Ronni Grofman then singled down the right field line to bring in Roberts and Savage and give the Huskies a 4-0 advantage.

Commerce wouldn't go away however. After getting a single tally in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Lencia Powell, the hosts pushed two more across in the fourth on an RBI double from Emmie Miehe and an RBI groundout from Powell.

Now trailing by just one, the Lions would knot things up in the bottom of the sixth, as an RBI single from Isabella Arzola down the left field line scored Meihe and make it a 4-4 game.

In the seventh, the Huskies would load the bases to bring up Savage. She uncorked a blast to deep center field that was caught on the fence by centerfielder Tehya Pitts to save a grand slam and keep the Lions alive.

After a clean bottom of the seventh sent the game to extra frames, the Huskies put up a crooked number. Jasie Roberts reached on an error and stole second with one out. Ronni Grofman then pushed a single through the left side that brought around Roberts and gave HCU the lead for good.

A groundout by Jackie Jessup moved Grofman to third as the Huskies looked for some insurance. And that they got in the form of Maddy Bailey, who cranked a two-run dinger to centerfield, scoring Grofman and giving the Huskies a 7-4 lead. Lyndie Swanson struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth to finish off the extra-inning win.

Juls Garcia had her second three-hit game of the season to lead a season-high tying 14-hit outburst for the Huskies. Ronni Grofman went 2-4 and matched a career-high with three RBI, while Jackie Jessup and Haylie Savage each went 2-5. Jessup drove in a run and Savage scored once. Roberts was 1-4 but walked once, stole a base and scored thrice, while Bailey was 1-3 with two walks, her fourth homer of the season and two RBI to tie Roberts for second on the club.

Lyndie Swanson won it in relief of Kynleigh Evans. Evans went four and scattered seven hits and three runs, two earned before giving way to Swanson. She allowed just five hits and the one run while fanning four in improving to 8-7 on the campaign. The victory and strikeouts pulled her into the Top 10 all-time in each category, and she sits one appearance from the top spot in program history for games in the circle.

The Lions banged out 12 hits of their own in the game, three by Arzola and two apiece by Charlie Anger, Diamond Sefe and Miehe. Maddie Muller took the loss in relief, as she went the final six innings, shutting out the Huskies until the eighth.
