LUBBOCK, Texas - HBU fell in its season opener to No. 3 Texas Tech, 5-1, then dropped a 7-1 decision to Northern Colorado on opening day Friday at Dan Law Field.
Senior righthander
Kyle Gruller allowed four runs, only one earned, on three hits, struck out nine and walked four in 4.2 innings. Senior lefty
Brent Pronger gave up one unearned run on four hits, struck out two and walked three over the final 3.1 innings.
Clayton Beeter allowed one run on two hits, struck out six and walked one to earn the win for the Red Raiders, while Micah Dallas hurled three perfect innings with five strikeouts to notch the save.
Senior shortstop
Nathan Soriano doubled and scored the lone run for the Huskies, while junior designated hitter
Parker Wayne had the other hit.
Brian Klein went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Jace Jung went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Texas Tech.
Gruller cruised through four innings, before hitting Nate Rombach with a pitch to leadoff the fifth, followed by a double by Dillon Carter. After Rombach scored on an RBI groundout, the Red Raiders took advantage of three HBU errors to plate four more runs.
In the loss to UNC, senior first baseman
Johnny Gonzales doubled and scored, while senior second baseman
Trent Franson drove him in. Wayne and junior third baseman
Jake Miller singled.
Billy Moreland went 2-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run, while Hayden Heinze was 2-for-3 with three runs scored for the Bears. Sam Leach and Josh Glenn each drove in two runs.
Sophomore
Chris Burns allowed seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and six walks in 3.2 innings. Senior
John Gillett threw 1.1 innings, junior
Dylan Murphy two and freshman Kobe Calerone one inning of scoreless relief.
Isaac Bracken shut HBU out on one hit with nine strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Connor Anderson allowed an unearned run on one hit in one inning, while Logan Chase and Andrew Willmon each tossed a scoreless frame.
The Huskies face third-ranked Texas Tech Saturday, followed by Northern Colorado Sunday.
