BSB: McNeese Rallies Past HBU in 9th

Senior righthander JT Newton goes 8 2/3 in first career start at HBU

HOUSTON - Senior righthander JT Newton shut McNeese out for eight innings, but the Cowboys rallied for five runs in the ninth inning for a 5-1 victory in the season finale Saturday afternoon at Husky Field.

Newton (0-6) allowed five runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in 8.2 innings. He made his first career start at HBU, after 68 appearances out of the bullpen.

Senior second baseman Derek Reilly singled and drove in the lone run for the Huskies (18-35, 10-20 SLC). Senior catcher Erik Voller singled to finish his career with an 11-game hitting streak. Junior first baseman Matt Solomon doubled, while junior designated hitter Trent Franson walked to finish the season by reaching safely in each of his last 30 games.

Clayton Rasbeary went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs, while Brett Whelton and Reid Bourque each went 2-for-4 for McNeese (31-24, 16-14). Payton Harden went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Will Dion (5-0) picked up the win, holding HBU scoreless on one hit with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Starter Brad Kincaid allowed one run on two hits with three strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

The Cowboys loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning, but Newton got Jacob Stracner to hit into a 5-2-3 double play and Jake Dickerson struck out to end the inning.

The game was scoreless through four innings, but junior third baseman Cal Clark was hit by a pitch and went to second on a wild pitch in the fifth. Reilly then came through with an RBI single to right to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Newton struck out Carson Maxwell to lead off the ninth, but Julian Gonzales was hit by a pitch, Brett Whelton blooped a single to center and Bourque's infield single loaded the bases. Harden walked to force in the tying run, then Nate Fisbeck struck out for the second out. Rasbeary then hit a deep fly ball that hit off a pole in the centerfield fence and caromed toward right field, resulting in an inside-the-park grand slam and a 5-1 lead for McNeese.

The Huskies loaded the bases in the ninth, but were unable to score.

Saturday marked the final game in the HBU careers of seniors Newton, Reilly, Voller, Anthony Jones, Taylor Franzman, Brady Batten, Daniel Endsley and Zach Carter, who are featured in the photo that accompanies this story.
