2018 (Junior): Newton was selected to the Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America Third Team…led the team and ranked 12^th in the Southland Conference with 25 appearances, all out of the bullpen…went 3-5 with a 7.15 ERA, tied for sixth in the league with five saves, struck out 21 and walked 19 in 34.0 innings…made two appearances on the same day at the Southland Conference Tournament, throwing 6.1 shutout innings…notched a two-inning save against top-seeded Sam Houston State, then allowed one hit in 4.1 innings of relief to earn the win against New Orleans (5/25)…picked up his first two saves of the season in wins over Baylor (2/17) and Fresno State (2/23)…recorded a two-inning save in a 3-2 victory at Northwestern State (4/29).
 
2017 (Sophomore): Was named Southland Conference Relief Pitcher of the Year and All-Conference Second Team…appeared in 23 games, all in relief…went 7-0 with a 2.15 ERA, six saves, 43 strikeouts and 17 walks in 54.1 innings…notched his first save, allowing one run and striking out four in 1.2 innings against Fordham (2/19)…earned the win with one perfect inning in a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island (2/25)…pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win in an 8-7 victory over Southeastern Louisiana (3/24), then struck out four in 3.2 shutout innings to earn the save in a 6-3 win over the Lions (3/26)…struck out five in 2.1 scoreless innings to save a 2-1 win at Lamar (3/31)…recorded a save in back-to-back wins over Central Arkansas (4/7-4/8)…pitched 2.1 innings and was credited with the victory over Abilene Christian (4/13), then hurled 3.1 shutout innings and struck out five for a save against the Wildcats (4/15)…struck out three in four scoreless innings for save at Incarnate Word (4/21), then tossed 1.2 innings to get the win against the Cardinals (4/23)…earned the win with two scoreless innings against Northwestern State (4/28)…hurled 2.2 shutout innings for a win over New Orleans (5/7)…pitched 4.2 innings against Sam Houston State (5/14) for his longest outing of the season…allowed one unearned run in 4.1 innings to earn the win over Lamar in the Southland Conference Tournament (5/25)…named to the Southland Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
 
Previous School: Played one season at Cisco Junior College for coach David White...went 2-1 with a 4.88 ERA, one save, 32 strikeouts and 11 walks in 27.2 innings.
 
High School: Was a four-year  letterwinner at Bangs High School for coach Jim Bob Williams…pitched a perfect game in the first round of the state playoffs.
 
Personal: Full name is John Thomas Newton...born Sept. 9, 1995, in Brownwood, Texas…married his wife, Jaylee, on July 15, 2017…son of JD and Stephanie Brewer…has one brother, Colton Brewer, and one sister, Britney Newton…majoring in kinesiology.
