HOUSTON - HBU opens Southland Conference play, hosting a three-game series against defending regular-season champion Sam Houston State Friday through Sunday at Husky Field. The Husky Sports Network video broadcast with Russ Reneau will be available for all three games on HBUHuskies.com.

Junior first baseman Johnny Gonzales is hitting .333 with four doubles, a home run, eight RBIs and three runs, while senior outfielder Anthony Jones is hitting .286 with a double, a triple, seven RBIs and five runs for the Huskies (4-8). Junior rightfielder Brandon Bena and junior third baseman Trent Franson are tied for the team lead with six runs apiece.

HBU will send senior righthander Zach Carter, junior righthander Kyle Gruller and senior righthander Brady Batten to the mound. Senior righty JT Newton is tied for the league lead with three saves and junior rigthhander Jacob Coats is tied for the league lead with three wins -- all out of the bullpen.

Jordan Cannon is hitting .409 with four RBIs and five runs, while Colton Cowser is hitting .368 with four doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs and seven runs for SHSU (7-3). Clayton Harp and Hunter Hearn each have three home runs for the Bearkats.

The Bearkats are expected to start righthander Hayden Wesneski on Friday and have not determined a rotation for the rest of the weekend.

The two teams split last years' four meetings, with SHSU winning two-of-three in Huntsville, but HBU eliminating the top-seeded Bearkats at the Southland Conference Tournament.
