HOUSTON – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi came up with three runs in the seventh to break a tie, then held off HBU for a 5-3 victory in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Husky Field.
Senior centerfielder
Spencer Halloran went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two walks and scored, while senior rightfielder
Matt Heck tripled, drove in a run and scored for the Huskies (14-19). Junior leftfielder
Jake Scott drove in a pair of runs.
Junior righthander
Hunter McClellan took a no-decision for HBU, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Senior righthander
Marshall Herron (1-2) took the loss, giving up three unearned runs on three hits with a strikeouts and a walk in an inning.
Itchy Burts was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs and Andiud Martinez went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and scored for the Islanders (18-16). Enrique Sanchez went 2-for-4 and Thomas Jeffries went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice.
Cody Lecompte (1-0) picked up the win for TAMU-CC, holding HBU scoreless in two-thirds of an inning, while Cole Carter earned his first save, shutting out the Huskies on two hits with five strikeouts and a walk over the final two innings. Starter Chad Romere allowed one run on one hit with five strikeouts and three walks in four innings.
The Huskies loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first and scored a run when Scott beat out a potential double play for a 1-0 lead.
The Islanders tied the game in the fifth as Jeffries and Sanchez led off with back-to-back singles and Cam Boudreaux lifted a sacrifice fly to center.
In the seventh, Jeffries walked and Drake Osborn hit a ground ball to third, but Jeffries was safe on an error at second. Martinez gave TAMU-CC the lead with an RBI single, then Burts followed with a two-run double to put the Islanders ahead, 4-1.
Halloran led off the eighth with a double, then Heck followed with a triple and scored on a groundout by Scott to cut the deficit to one.
TAMU-CC added a run in the ninth when Osborn doubled and scored on an RBI single by Martinez.
