WACO, Texas – Baylor answered HBU's three-run third inning rally with a three spot of its own in the bottom half and went on to claim a 6-3 victory over the Huskies in the non-conference baseball series finale Sunday afternoon at Baylor Ballpark.
Senior catcher
Jake Pulcheon went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, walked twice and stole a base, while junior leftfielder
Anthony Jones singled, drove in a run, stole a base and scored. Senior rightfielder
Matt Heck tripled and scored for the Huskies (1-2).
Junior righthander
Daniel Endsley (0-1) took the loss allowing six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 3.1 innings. Senior righthander
Marshall Herron tossed 3.2 scoreless innings and senior righthander
Weston Smart threw a scoreless frame.
Davis Wendzel went 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles, two walks and scored twice for the Bears (2-1). Shea Langeliers went 2-for-5 with a home run and drove in a pair, while Andy Thomas went 3-for-3, walked twice and scored. Davion Downey singled, drove in a run and walked twice.
Hayden Kettler (1-0) earned the win for Baylor, allowing three unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Jacob Ashkinos threw three shutout innings and Troy Montemayor earned his second save of the season, holding the Huskies scoreless in the ninth.
Richard Cunningham led off the bottom of the first with a double, then Langeliers followed with a home run to left to put Baylor ahead, 2-0.
Senior second baseman
Jack Fitzgerald drew a one-out walk in the third, then senior centerfielder
Spencer Halloran reached on an error by Baylor shortstop Nick Loftin. Jones followed with a single to center, then stole second. Halloran was thrown out at home as Heck reached on a fielder's choice, but Pulcheon ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
The advantage was short-lived as T.J. Raguse delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the third and Downey's RBI single put the Bears ahead, 5-3. Wendzel's solo shot to left in the fourth was the final tally of the game.
The Huskies host Texas Southern in the home opener Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Husky Field.
