HOUSTON – HBU took advantage of six Stephen F. Austin errors to score a 6-2 victory in the first game, then put up crooked numbers in three innings of a 12-1 rout in game two to sweep the Lumberjacks in a Southland Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Husky Field.

In the second game, senior leftfielder Brandon Morones reached safely five times for the Huskies (18-16, 9-5 SLC), going 3-for-3 with a pair of walks, three RBIs and a pair of runs. Senior shortstop Louie Payetta went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while senior second baseman Greg Espinosa went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run. Junior rightfielder Brandon Brintz went 2-for-5 and scored twice, while junior catcher Blake Thomas drove in a run and scored twice.

Junior lefthander Christian Thames (2-3) earned the win, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in seven innings, then junior lefty Ivan Smith closed it out with a pair of scoreless frames that included two strikeouts.

Conner Fikes went 2-for-3 and scored the only run for SFA (16-20, 5-12), while Tyler Boxwell drove him in.

Jared Greene (4-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs, two earned, on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks in 4.2 innings, then the Lumberjacks' bullpen allowed five runs on three hits with five walks the rest of the way.

HBU scored a season-high 12 unanswered runs after SFA took a 1-0 lead when Fikes was hit by a pitch to lead off the second, Zac Michener was walked, Eric DeJesus laid down a sacrifice bunt and Boxwell's fly to left was deep enough to get the run home.

The Huskies got a bases-loaded single by Morones to tie the game, then Brintz scored on an errant throw on the play to give HBU the lead. Senior first baseman Andrew Alvarez added an RBI single in the third and junior centerfielder Zane Otten scored on a pass ball in the fourth to make the score, 4-1.

Sophomore designated hitter Carey Jones doubled with one out in the fifth, then Thomas walked. Morones delivered another RBI single and Payetta followed with a two-run single. HBU erupted for five runs in the sixth inning as Espinosa had a two-run double and SFA walked in three runs.

In the first game, SFA made six errors in the first three innings that led to four unearned runs and staked HBU to a 5-0 lead.

Payetta went 2-for-3 and scored twice, while Brintz went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run.

Junior righthander Addison Russ (6-2) earned the win for the Huskies, allowing two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and three walks in eight innings.

Kyle Thornell went 2-for-2 with a home run, an RBI and a run for SFA, Garrett McMullen went 2-for-3 with a run and Clark Kahawaii went 2-for-3.

Payetta was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first, then Espinosa and Zillweger each laid down sacrifice bunts, but reached on errors. Senior designated hitter Austin Saenz put HBU ahead with a sacrifice fly and Alvarez came through with an RBI single. Alvarez and senior leftfielder Justin Monsour reached on back-to-back errors to lead off the third, each advanced on a wild pitch and Alvarez scored on an error. Monsour scored on Brintz's RBI single, then Brintz stole second, third and scored on an error.

Kyle Thornell got SFA on the board with a solo home run to right in the fourth, but HBU got the run back on Espinosa's RBI single in the bottom of the inning to lead, 6-1. Michener's RBI single in the eighth was the game's final tally.

The series concludes Saturday at 11 a.m. at Husky Field. The HBUTV video and Legacy Sports Network audio broadcast with Russ Reneau begins at 10:45 with the pregame show and can be accessed on HBUHuskies.com and LSN.
