HAMMOND, La. -- Battling sweltering conditions in his debut at the event, Garrison Fick set an HBU record and finished fourth in the decathlon Saturday to lead the Huskies on the second day of the Southland Conference Track & Field Championships at Southeastern Louisiana. The event leader after the first five events Friday, Fick had lifetime bests in the 110 hurdles, javelin and 1500 on the way to scoring 6,302 points and notching the first five points of the meet for the men.

For the third time this season, Michelle Chukwujekwu broke the school record in the women's triple jump. Chukwujekwu's mark of 11.89m/39-0 in the first round added two-and-a-half inches to her existing record and placed her eighth to move the HBU women to nine points with one day remaining in the meet. Emily Sacky was 23rd with a season-best 10.83m/35-6.5.

In the day's other finals with HBU interest, Carolyn McClanahan finished 12th in the 3000 steeplechase at 11:42.64 and Shawn O'Brien was 16th in the javelin at 46.26m/151-9.

Kierstin Santana won her heat in the 800 with a time of 2:13.77 to automatically advance to Sunday's final, and Christian Guzman clocked 14.49 to win his 110 hurdles heat and also advance automatically. Guzman came back to run 53.13 in the 400 hurdles and sneak into the final as the eighth qualifier. Freshman Tambrisha Banks had a lifetime best of 11.78 to take first in her heat of the 100 and move on to the final, and also advanced in the 200 with a 24.44.

Running a commanding race that saw him lead almost from the start, freshman Daniel Shelton had the fastest qualifying time in the 800 at 1:50.86. Two Huskies moved on to the men's 1500 final with Jeremy Lewis the third-fastest overall at 3:55.96 and Juan Fraga the 10th-best at 3:57.77. Jaivairia Bacote broke her own HBU record in the 400 hurdles with a 61.15 that made her the fourth-fastest qualifier to the final, and Jordan Claypool smashed his personal best in the 100 at 10.77 to take 13th overall.

Day three of the Championships starts at 10 a.m. Sunday with the women's discus. Running finals begin at noon with the 4x100 relays.
