Kierstin Santana raced to silver in the women's 800 meters and seven HBU records fell Tuesday on the final day of the Southland Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the CrossPlex. Santana, who won bronze last year as a freshman, ran an indoor lifetime best of 2:14.12 to take second, and she also anchored the Huskies' record-setting 4x400 that placed fourth.
Freshman
Ericka Rodriguez led off the relay with a PR 57.1 leg before passing to
Jazmine Warden, who split 57.3. Another freshman,
Gbemisola Orundami, sprinted to a 56.5 on the third carry before Santana matched that on the anchor to stop the clock at 3:47.34, more than two seconds faster than the previous record of 3:49.50, set in 2011.
Ranked among the nation's top punters during the 2014 football season,
Christian Guzman proved just as effective in the hurdles as he missed out on a bronze medal by only five-thousandths of a second to take fourth with an HBU-record 8.21.
Multi-talented
Garrison Fick crushed his lifetime best and school record in the heptathlon, scoring 4,835 points to add 250 to his previous best. He had a PR 9.11 in the 60 hurdles to start the day, and added lifetime bests in the pole vault (a school-record 3.65m/11-11.75) and 1000 (2:50.47) to finish sixth overall.
Also finishing sixth in the 800 was freshman
Daniel Shelton. Shelton has made a habit of breaking records, and today was no different. Running cautiously early in the race, Shelton stayed out of trouble and was able to make a strong move over the final 200 to finish at 1:52.60, more than a second faster than the record he set in the prelims Monday.
Michelle Chukwujekwu added a centimeter to her HBU record in the triple jump with a leap of 11.58m/38-0 to take sixth, and the men's 4x400 relay shattered the existing school record with a 3:16.02 to place seventh.
Jordan Claypool continued his breakthrough season with a 49.2 leadoff leg, followed by a 49.0 from
D'Anthony Graham. Seniors
David Hicks (49.0) and
Brice Christian (48.9) closed out the record effort and held off Incarnate Word to put the Huskies in a three-way tie for tenth in the final team points standings.
The Huskies ended with up with 28 points to take eighth in the women's team scoring, while the men tallied 14, 10 more than last year.
