Taylor Thomas won the women's long jump and a pair of newcomers put their names in the HBU record book Friday at the UH Indoor Opener at Yeoman Fieldhouse. Thomas, who was the long jump silver medalist at the 2014 Southland Conference indoor championships as a freshman, had a best of 5.68m/18-7.75 on her second attempt to edge a duo of Houston jumpers.
Freshman
Daniel Shelton clocked 1:55.91 to finish fifth in the men's 800 and break the school record of 1:56.22, set in 2011 by
Ulysses Montoya. In the women's triple jump, transfer
Michelle Chukwujekwu spanned 11.57m/37-11.5 to finish fourth and add six inches to the previous school record, set in 2013 by
Morgan Pressley.
Other top performances included a win by
Gabriela Busquet in the women's 5000-meters (19:27.22) and a second-place finish by
David Hicks in the men's 400 (50.49).
Kierstin Santana, the SLC indoor bronze medalist last year, was third in the 800 with her 2:19.03 to beat conference champion Briana McCall of Sam Houston, while
Enrique Perez was third in the 5000 with a PR of 15:35.64.
Oscar Garcia also notched a lifetime best behind Perez at 15:40.85.
Lifetime bests were recorded in the men's 60m hurdles by
Christian Guzman, who qualified for the final with his 8.39 and became the second fastest HBU hurdler ever, and
Shawn O'Brien, who ran 8.43 in the prelims. Senior
Valerie Abadom improved her PR to 13.15m/43-1.75 to place ninth in 20-pound weight throw, and
Jordan Claypool zipped to a 7.16 in the men's 60 to qualify for the semifinal. In the women's 400, freshman
Gbemisola Orundami had an impressive 59.17 to place seventh overall, a placing matched by
Lakesha Cameron in the 60 (7.76).
The Huskies return to the track Jan. 16 at the Texas A&M 13-Team Invitational.
