TULSA, Okla. – HBU took advantage of a couple of Oral Roberts errors to score three runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game, but the Golden Eagles answered with a two-out, walkoff single in the bottom of the inning for a 6-5 victory in the Southland Conference baseball series opener Thursday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Junior third baseman
Curtis Jones went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for the Huskies (16-18, 6-10 SLC), while junior second baseman
Josh Martinez went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior leftfielder
Jordan McCoy extended his hitting streak to 12 games and scored twice, while junior centerfielder
Zach Nehrir drove in a run, but saw his 10-game hitting streak come to an end.
Tyler Boss went 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Jose Trevino went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run for the Golden Eagles (20-17, 8-8). Joey Migliaccio drove in a pair of runs for ORU.
Jordan Romano (2-2) was credited with the win for ORU, despite giving up three unearned runs on two hits with five strikeouts over the final two innings. Starter Guillermo Trujillo allowed one run on two hits, but walked four in 2.2 innings.
Junior
Taylor Wright received a no-decision for HBU, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits, with four strikeouts and a walk in eight innings. Sophomore
Dylan Zarosky (2-1) took the loss, allowing one run on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
ORU took the lead in the second when Boss led off with a single and Anthony Squeira reached on an error after putting down a sacrifice bunt. Migliaccio delivered a two-run single, then scored on a doubled by Brandon Healy to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 advantage.
Senior first baseman
Mike Chamberlain and senior catcher
Jordan Hebert drew back-to-back walks to leadoff the third for HBU, and Jones got the Huskies on the board with an RBI single.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fifth as Logan Domenico doubled and scored on a single by Matt Brandy to put ORU ahead, 4-1.
The Huskies threatened in the sixth when McCoy singled, Nehrir walked, and Martinez singled to load the bases with no outs, but HBU came away with only one run when junior
Samm Wiggins lifted a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-2.
In the eighth, Trevino doubled to left and scored when Sequeira reached on a fielder's choice, putting ORU up, 5-2.
In the top of the ninth, Jones singled and senior first baseman
Bradley Brown followed with a double to put runners in scoring position with one out. McCoy reached on an error, which allowed Jones to score, then pinch runner
Christian Cokinos scored when Nehrir reached on an error. The Huskies tied the game on Martinez's squeeze bunt, but Chamberlain and Wiggins struck out to end the threat.
Graham McIntyre led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to center and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Healy. After Domenico walked and McIntyre went to third on a wild pitch, Dean Wilson popped out to short for the second out. Domenico stole second to take away the force play, then Trevino came through with a single to end the game.
The series continues Friday at 6:30 p.m., followed by the finale Saturday at 2 p.m.
