Volleyball Falls to Nebraska-Omaha in Opener

HOUSTON – HBU battled back in the second set to even the match at the break, but Nebraska-Omaha took the last two sets for a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19) victory in the season opener at the Houston Marriott Westchase Classic Friday night at Sharp Gym.


Junior outside hitter Bailey Keith led the Huskies (0-1) with 10 kills. Senior middle blocker Caiti Wenger added nine kills and five blocks, while junior outside hitter Megan McStravick also had nine kills along with 14 digs. Junior defensive specialist Haley Hoffman led HBU with 15 digs. Freshman setter Kayla Armer had 39 assists, 14 digs, four kills and a pair of blocks.

Kelley Wollak led the Mavericks with 14 kills. Michaela Schimmer added 21 assists for Nebraska-Omaha, along with 11 digs. Kimberly Bailey had a match-high 28 digs for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks hit .200 while holding the Huskies to .059. UNO outblocked HBU, 13-6, and both teams had a total of 75 digs.

The Houston Marriott Westchase Classic will continue tomorrow at Sharp Gym. HBU will face Louisiana at 9:30 a.m., followed by UTPA and UNO at noon. Louisiana plays UNO at 5:00 p.m., then the tournament concludes with HBU hosting UTPA at 7:30 p.m.
