MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama got a double-double from Augustine Rubit and made nine 3-pointers in a 79-59 win over HBU in the CBE Hall of Fame Classic Sunday afternoon at the Mitchell Center.
Sophomore guard
Rob Lewis led HBU (1-5) with 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while sophomore forward
Cody Joyce had 10 points. Freshman forward
Alex Fountain scored a season-high eight points and freshman center
Cody Stetler also had a season high with seven points and three rebounds. Sophomore forward
Caleb Crayton led the Huskies with eight rebounds.
Rubit made 7-of-15 from the field and recorded 17 points and 13 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end, for USA (4-2). Ken Williams made three of the Jaguars' 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. Dionte Ferguson and Aakim Saintil each added nine points.
Both teams shot 37 percent from the field for the game, but USA went 9-for-28 from behind the arc, while HBU made only 1-of-9. The Jaguars went 22-for-26 from the free-throw line, and the Huskies went 20-for-23. USA outrebounded HBU, 41-36, including 15-7 on offensive boards, which led to a 19-4 advantage in second-chance points.
The Jaguars scored the first six points of the game, including a 3-pointer by Barrington Stevens, but Joyce got the Huskies on the board with a layup. After USA went up 8-2 on a pair of free throws, but HBU scored the next six on a reverse layup by Crayton on the dish from junior guard
Marcel Smith, and a short hook and a pair of free throws by sophomore forward
Dauson Womack. The Jaguars regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Saintil, then a three-point play by Rubit. After a Lewis floater made it 13-10, USA scored eight-straight to extend their lead to 11 with 9:38 remaining.

Tyler Russell got the Huskies back within six, but Isaiah Maston answered with a three for the Jaguars. Freshman guard
Jimmy Barton knocked a down a trey from the corner, but Williams and Mychal Ammons hit back-to-back threes to give USA a 12-point lead. Williams and Rubit connected on back-to-back treys to extend the Jaguars advantage to 41-25 with 2:27 to go in the half. Joyce scored the last six points of the half for the Huskies, but USA took a 46-31 lead into the break.
Both teams shot 44 percent from the field in the first half, but USA hit 6-of-15 3-pointers, while HBU made only 1-of-5. Lewis led HBU with 10 points, and Rubit had 14 for the Jaguars at halftime.
USA outscored HBU 16-2 over the first 9:02 of the second half to build a 29-point lead. Stetler scored five-straight for the Huskies, but the Jaguars stayed hot from outside, getting threes from Antoine Allen and Williams to take their largest lead of the game, 68-38, with 9:18 remaining. The Huskies were able to trim 10 points off that deficit down the stretch.
