HUMBLE, Texas -- Jarrett Gilliam smashed the school record in the men's hammer throw and Cassie Juarez improved her own school standard in the javelin to highlight Houston Baptist University performances Thursday on the opening day of the Great West Conference Track & Field Championships at Turner Stadium.

Gilliam, who placed fourth, added more than seven feet to his own lifetime best with a 53.61 meters/175-11 toss, topping the old record of 51.17/167-10 set by Jake Adkins in March. Adkins was sixth today.

In placing seventh in the women's javelin, Juarez tacked on more than two feet to her record with a 34.80/114-2 throw.

Two-time GWC 10,000 champion Maximo Mendoza was the highest-placing finisher for the Huskies on the day, running to bronze in 31:39.09, and Angela Rojas was ninth in the women's 10K at 41:03.16.

North Dakota leads the men's team standings with 22 points, eight ahead of sixth-place HBU. Three-time defending champs Utah Valley sit atop the women's standings with 47 points. HBU is tied for sixth with three.

Competition on Friday begins at noon with the decathlon 110 hurdles, and field event finals kick off at 1. Running event preliminaries start at 4:05.
