STERLING, Ill. --
Brittane Gaines dashed to her third 60-meters title and
Jake Adkins and
Maximo Mendoza grabbed golds Sunday to cap off a stellar pair of team performances by Houston Baptist University on the final day of the Great West Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Westwood Sports Center.
Gaines, who is undefeated in GWC 60 dash finals, earned recognition for the meet's top female performance with her record-setting 7.50 Saturday in the prelims. She came back to score a convincing win in the final with a 7.55 clocking, more than two-tenths faster than the runner-up. Later in the afternoon Gaines added a bronze in the 200.
For the second day in a row Adkins unleashed a season-best throw to take gold, this time in the shot put. The junior from Deer Park, who shattered the school record in the 35-pound weight throw Saturday, tossed the shot 15.59 meters/51-1.75 to win by more than six inches.
Trey Rodriguez was eighth.
Coming off a relatively disappointing eighth-place finish in Saturday's 5000, Mendoza won a thrilling 3000 with a stunning kick over the final 200 meters, stopping the clock at 8:32.56.
Matt Perri was fourth behind Mendoza at 8:35.73, after earlier racing to silver in the mile. The Tomball junior made a mad dash to the line over the final 50 meters, but was outleaned by Utah Valley's Chris Dorton for the title.
The Huskies scored 25 points in the women's 400, led by a 2-3-4 finish for
Tramisha McGrew,
Zelda Abadom and
Morgan Pressley.
Disa Foster was sixth, followed by
Sharonda Bryant and
Joslyn Cooper. The first three Huskies teamed up with
Kenisa Haynes in the final event to take silver in a hotly-contested 4x400 relay.
Sharing the spotlight in the quarter, freshman
Brice Christian nabbed bronze in the men's race, with fellow frosh
David Hicks and
LaDarien Harris finishing 5-6. That trio, along with
Brandon Boyd, won bronze in the 4x400 with a season-best 3:24.75. Harris was also seventh in the 200.
Two freshman jumpers made a big impact, as
Darrell Dotson triple jumped to silver at 13.59m/44-7 and
Michael Roberts improved his own HBU indoor high jump record to take silver with a 2.00m/6-6.75 clearance. Roberts scored four more points in the triple jump with a fifth-place effort.
A surprise sprint/hurdle double saw
Gabe O'Neale take bronze in the 60H with a season-best 8.42 and fifth in the 60 dash.
Kourtney Lofton was fifth and
Candace Montgomery eighth in the women's 60H, and in the 60,
Skyla Williams was fourth and
Amber Goodson placed seventh.
Middle distance points for the HBU women came from
Jessica Whitt, who was fifth in the 800, and
Hiba Kreidie, who placed fifth in the mile.
Anthony Aguinaga was fourth in the 800 and fifth in the mile.
Behind Gaines in the 200,
Joslyn Cooper (4th), Williams (7th) and McGrew (8th) added valuable points for the Huskies.
Lofton and
Nia Epperson were fifth and seventh in the women's triple jump with season bests, while
Jade Penick had a 2012 best to place fifth in the women's shot put and
Erin Buck notched a personal best for seventh in the event.
Utah Valley swept the team titles, with HBU taking second in the men's competition and third in the women's, one point behind North Dakota.
