Box Score

CHICAGO – After Houston Baptist junior rightfielder Kolby Arnst tied the game with a two-out single in the seventh, junior designated hitter Robbie Buller launched a monster home run to left and the Huskies held on for a 7-5 victory over Chicago State Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field to claim three-out-of-four in the Great West Conference series.

Arnst went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Buller went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored for HBU (15-32, 13-7 GWC). Senior first baseman Beau Warren went 2-for-2 and walked twice, and junior leftfielder Luke Clements went 1-for-3 with a home run, two runs and an RBI.

William Hill went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jonathan Carpen went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Chicago State (8-34, 3-14). Albert Carpen went 2-for-5 and drove in a pair, and Michael Carpen went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Freshman righthander Kyle Dickerson (4-0) remained perfect in conference play for the Huskies, allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits, striking out four and walking four in six innings. Sophomore righthander Scott Moore earned his first career save, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in three innings. Dylan Sterrett (2-5) took the loss for Chicago State, giving up five runs on nine hits, while striking out nine and walking three in seven innings. Albert Carpen gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and walked three in two innings.

The Cougars got on the board first with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning. Jonathan Carpen was hit by a pitch and stole second, then Hill reached on an error by junior shortstop Collin Hetzler that should have ended the inning. Albert Carpen and Michael Carpen then delivered back-to-back RBI singles.

Clements cut the lead in half in the third with a solo home run to right, his fourth of the series and fourth of the year.

Chicago State got the run back in the fourth, as Hill led off with a single, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Albert Carpen's groundout to second, putting the Cougars ahead, 3-1. HBU answered back in the fifth as Clements walked, stole second, went to third on Hetzler's groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Arnst.

In the seventh, junior catcher Asai Adame blooped a single down the right-field line, Clements laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Hetzler's groundout put Adame on third. Arnst then ripped a line drive to left-center to tie the game, 3-3, and Buller followed with his career-high 11th home run of the season.

In the eighth, Jonathan Carpen led off with a single off the glove of junior third baseman Ryan Bacak, who nearly made an incredible diving, backhanded catch down the line. Ryan Malhorta laid down a bunt to Moore, but his throw to first sailed high, allowing Malhorta to reach safely and Jonathan Carpen to go to third. Hill singled to center to cut the HBU lead to 5-4, but Albert Carpen struck out and Michael Carpen grounded back to Moore for an inning-ending double play.

The Huskies added what proved to be necessary insurance in the ninth. Arnst singled, stole second and went to third when the throw skipped into centerfield, then Buller walked and also stole second. Arnst scored and Buller advanced to third on junior centerfielder Jake Gonzalez's sacrifice fly. Senior Chase Hernandez, who entered as a defensive replacement when Warren was lifted for pinch runner J.P. Seipel in the eighth, delivered a two-out RBI double to right to put HBU up 7-4.

In the Cougars' final at-bat, Miguel Camacho drew a two-out walk and scored on Weston Lewis' double to left-center, but Jonathan Carpen hit a sharp grounder to third to end the game.

The Huskies return to action when they travel to face Prairie View A&M Tuesday at 2 p.m. in their final non-conference game of the season. HBU travels to first-place Utah Valley for a four-game Great West Conference series Thursday through Saturday in Orem, Utah.
