Prairie View A&M Deflates HBU Comeback

Sophomore CF Jake Gonzalez goes 3-for-5 with a double and a home run for Huskies.

Freshman second baseman Garrett Tully's three-run double was part of an eight-run rally which tied the game the Huskies eventually lost at Prairie View A&M Tuesday.
Box Score

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Houston Baptist rallied for eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to the game at 11, but Evan Richard's home run in the bottom of the inning provided the difference as Prairie View A&M turned back the Huskies, 12-11, in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Tankersley Field.

Sophomore centerfielder Jake Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a double, his third home run of the season, scored two runs and drove in two runs for HBU (15-33). Junior leftfielder Luke Clements stayed hot, extending his hitting streak to seven games, while going 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Junior rightfielder Kolby Arnst ran his hitting streak to nine games, tying the longest by an HBU player this season, by going 2-for-5 with a double, driving in two and scoring one. Freshman second baseman Garrett Tully had three RBIs, while junior designated hitter Robbie Buller drove in a pair.

Darryl Johnson was a single shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs for the Panthers (24-19). Richard went 2-for-3, drove in two and scored one, while Brandon Brooks went 2-for-4, drove in a pair and scored a run. Andre Oliver was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Rafael Perez went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Daniel Castillo did not allow a run, but gave up three hits over the final two innings, to pick up the win for Prairie View A&M, which used six pitchers. HBU used five pitchers, with sophomore Matt Warren taking the loss, only giving up Richard's homer in one inning of work. Senior Stephen Nikonchik kept the game from getting out of hand to allow the Huskies to come back, allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings.

After falling behind 10-1 after five innings, HBU scored two runs in sixth on an RBI double by Clements and an RBI single by Arnst to make the score 11-3.

The first eight batters in the top of the eighth all reached safely without the aid of a Prairie View A&M error. Clements and junior shortstop Collin Hetzler drew back-to-back walks from Cody Thompson to leadoff the inning, and were followed by Arnst's RBI double to center. Buller drove in two more with a single to left, Gonzalez singled to left and Thompson was lifted for Travis Tipps. Tipps didn't fare much better as he was greeted by an RBI single up the middle by senior first baseman Chase Hernandez. After plunking freshman third baseman Tanner Kalina with a pitch to load the bases, Tully ripped a bases-clearing double to right-center to get the Huskies within one, and chase Tipps in favor of Castillo. The Panthers finally recorded an out as junior catcher Asai Adame moved Tully up with a sacrfice bunt, and Clements tied the game with a single to left. Hetzler also singled, but Arnst popped up to first and Buller grounded out to end the rally.

After Richard regained the lead for the Panthers in the eighth, Gonzalez led off the ninth for the Huskies with a double down the leftfield line, and Hernandez moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. With the infield drawn in, Kalina grounded out to shortstop, keeping Gonzalez at third. After Tully was hit by a pitch, Adame grounded out to third to end the game.

The Huskies return to action when they travel to face first-place Utah Valley in a four-game Great West Conference series Thursday through Saturday in Orem, Utah. Saturday's finale has been moved up and will now start at 12 p.m. CDT (11 a.m. MDT). The audio broadcast for each game is available on HBUHuskies.com.
