CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored seven runs in the second inning and held off Houston Baptist for an 11-8 victory in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Chapman Field.
Junior second baseman David Pfuntner went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored for the Huskies (1-19). Junior shortstop Collin Hetzler went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run, freshman third baseman Tanner Kalina went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI, while senior designated hitter Beau Warren went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Junior catcher Corey Hail drove in a pair of runs.
Chris Vergne went 4-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs for TAMU-CC (20-8), while Weston Montgomery went 3-for-4 with a run. Matt Holland had two hits and two RBI, while Bobby Buckner and Logan Nottebrok each had two hits and two runs. Jacob Perales had a pair of hits, an RBI and a run, and Dan Sciantarelli drove in a pair of runs and scored one.
Brett Carnline (5-1) picked up the win for the Islanders, allowing one hit in 1.2 innings, while senior Chase Hernandez (0-3) took the loss for the Huskies, giving up seven runs on eight hits in 1.2 innnings. Philip Garcia notched the save for TAMU-CC by getting the final two outs of the game.
HBU jumped on top with four runs in the second inning as junior leftfielder Luke Clements led off with a double and scored on Warren's RBI single to rightcenter. Junior rightfielder Kolby Arnst followed with a single, and Kalina bunted his way on to load the bases. Hail grounded out to plate another run, then Pfuntner smashed a two-run doubled down the leftfield line to put the Huskies ahead 4-0.
TAMU-CC answered back with a huge second inning after going down 1-2-3 in the first. Perales and Buckner led off with back-to-back singles and a Nottebrok double brought home the Islanders' first run. Vergne followed with a two-run double to right. Sciantarelli's single to center tied the game, 4-4, and Montgomery doubled to put runners in scoring position. Holland's two-run single gave the Islanders the lead, and Perales capped the inning with an RBI double to make the score 7-4.
In the fourth, Kalina led off with a double down the leftfield line and scored on Hail's single to right. Hail scored on a sacrfice fly by junior first baseman Robbie Buller to bring HBU within one at 7-6. However, TAMU-CC came back with a pair of runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Vergne and a sacrfice fly by Sciantarelli.
The Islanders added two more in the eighth on RBI singles by Jumpy Garcia and Jeramie Marek, before the Huskies answered with a pair in their final at-bat. Pfuntner led off with a ground-rule double to leftcenter and scored as Hetzler followed with an RBI single. Two wild pitches advanced Hetzler to third, then sophomore centerfielder Jake Gonzalez walked. Hetzler scored and Gonzalez went to second on another wild pitch, and Gonzalez advanced to third on the fourth TAMU-CC wild pitch of the inning. Junior pinch hitter J.P. Seipel walked to put runners on the corners and the tying run at the plate with one out, but Warren grounded into a double play to end the game.
The Huskies will play its next eight games at home, beginning with a three-game series against Dallas Baptist Thursday through Saturday. Each game is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Husky Field.
