EL PASO, Texas – The HBU softball team run-ruled host UTEP in game one, 10-2, but was run-ruled in game two, falling to the Miners 10-1, Saturday evening at Helen of Troy Softball Complex.
In game one, HBU got on the board first, scoring a single run in the top of the second.
Kaitlin Southerland walked and advanced to second on a Miner error, as
Callie Herrington reached on a fielder's choice. The next batter,
Mollye Mlcak singled up the middle, scoring Southerland.
The Huskies exploded for nine runs in the top of the third.
Rebecca Rademacher started the inning with a double, followed by a single up the middle by
Daniella Rodarte, scoring Rademacher. Following a strikeout,
Sara Corcoran singled to left field, advancing Rodarte to second. Southerland walked, loading the bases for Herrington, who was hit by a pitch, scoring Rodarte.
The Miners had a pitching change, but the first batter Joanna Kreinitz faced, Mlcak doubled down the left-field line, scoring Corcoran and Southerland.
Jammie Weidert followed suit and singled down the left-field line, scoring Herrington.
Kate Maddock reached on an error, which scored Mlcak. The Huskies batted around, as Rademacher was back up and doubled again, scoring Weidert. Following another pitching change for UTEP,
Mac Christensen completed the scoring, as she singled down the left-field line, scoring Maddock and Rademacher, as the Huskies led UTEP 10-0 through two-and-a-half innings.
There was no scoring until the bottom of the fifth, when UTEP had to score at least two to keep the game going. Two consecutive hits by the Miners had players at first and second with nobody out. Weidert struck out Becky Smith for the first out, but Kia Moore doubled to right field, scoring Camille Herrera. The Miners got their second run as Samantha Alvillar scored on a wild pitch.
Mlcak led the Huskies at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored. Rademacher was the only other player to have two hits. Weidert earned her third win in as many appearances, allowing five hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out 10.
UTEP was held to five hits as Moore, Chelsea Troupe, Carrera, Herrera and Alvillar had one hit apiece. Courtney Auger took the loss, pitching 2.1 innings and allowing four hits, six runs – five earned – and two walks while striking out four.
Game two was the complete opposite of game one, as, after spotting HBU a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the second inning, UTEP scored 10 unanswered for the win.
Herrington started the top of the second with a single. She advanced to second on a single by
Holly Webb and advanced to third on the throw. She scored on a
Jaymie Heibel fielder's choice.
In the bottom of the second, Courtney Ware singled and one batter later, UTEP had its first lead on the day with one swing, as Herrera homered to left field, as UTEP led 2-1 entering the third inning.
UTEP added another run in the bottom of the third as Moore started the inning with a single and advanced to second on the throw. Following a walk, Troupe singled, scoring Moore.
The Miners erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth, as the Huskies had three errors in the inning.
HBU was held to four hits in the nightcap, as Rademacher, Christensen, Herrington and Webb had a hit apiece.
Beth Evans took the loss, allowing 10 hits, 10 runs – four earned – and one walk while striking out four in 3.1 innings.
UTEP was led by Carrera, Kayleigh Walts and Herrera, who all had two hits apiece. Carrera and Walts had three RBI each while Herrera had two. Laura Ramos earned the win, allowing four hits, one earned run and three walks while whiffing five in all five innings.
HBU (3-4) will conclude the weekend series at UTEP with a single game beginning at 2 pm CST on Sunday.
