Huskies Win Game One, Split Doubleheader with SHSU

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The HBU softball team run-ruled Sam Houston State in game one, 9-1 in six innings, but lost game two, 9-5, to split the doubleheader Wednesday evening in Huntsville.

In game one, HBU scored the game's first four runs before Sam Houston State got on the board. The Huskies then scored five runs in two innings to run-rule the Bearkats.

In the top of the first, with one out, Daniella Rodarte doubled to left field. One batter later, Sara Corcoran singled up to right-center field to score Rodarte.

Mollye Mlcak homered in the top of the second as the Huskies led, 2-0. The next batter, Kate Maddock singled, then Rebecca Rademacher walked, as the Huskies had runners at first and second with one out. Rodarte singled, followed by a Mac Christensen single which scored Rademacher.

After a scoreless third, HBU added a single run in the top of the fourth to lead, 4-0, as SHSU had two errors in the inning. The Bearkats got on the board in the bottom half of the inning as they had back-to-back doubles, as HBU led 4-1.

The Huskies exploded for three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to run-rule SHSU. In the top of the fifth, following a Kaitlin Southerland walk, Callie Herrington hit a two-run home run to left field. The very next batter, Jammie Weidert, doubled to right-center. Following two consecutive outs, Rademacher doubled to left-center, scoring Weidert.

In the top of the sixth, following a Corcoran walk, Southerland homered to left field to complete the scoring.

HBU had 14 hits, as Rodarte, Southerland, Herrington, Mlcak and Maddock each had two hits. Christensen, Southerland and Herrington each had two RBI. Weidert earned her second straight victory, allowing five hits, one earned run and did not walk a batter while striking out seven.

SHSU was led at the plate by Kim Damian and Sarah Allison, who each went 2-for-3. Shelby Lancaster took the loss as she pitched 4.2 innings and allowed 12 hits, six earned runs and two walks while striking out seven.

In game two, SHSU scored all nine runs in the first two innings for the win.

The Bearkats scored two runs in the bottom of the first. After an opening walk, Alyssa Coggins reached on an error and advanced a base on the throw, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. The Bearkats scored their first run on a wild pitch, advancing Coggins to third. Damian singled down the right-field line, scoring Coggins.

The Huskies tied the game at two in the top of the second, as Herrington singled up the middle. Following a Mlcak walk, Maddock singled down the right-field line, scoring Herrington and advancing Mlcak to third. Mlcak scored on a wild pitch, tying the game.

SHSU erupted for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning, erasing the tied game. Allison and Shelbi Tucker had two RBI apiece in the inning, while Damian, Cali Wood and Amy Pelton had an RBI each.
Kendall Stiefel got out of the inning without any more damage done and was replaced by Beth Evans in the bottom of the third. Evans shut down the Bearkats for the rest of the game.

The Huskies scored three times in the top of the fifth, bringing the deficit to four, at 9-5. Rademacher and Rodarte had back-to-back singles to start the inning. Christensen walked, loading the bases. The very next batter, Corcoran hit into a fielder's choice, as the Bearkats got Christensen out at second, but Rademacher scored, making it 9-3 SHSU. Southerland singled, scoring Rodarte. Following a pitching change, Herrington singled, scoring Corcoran. But the Huskies could get no more the rest of the fifth and in the sixth or seventh.

Herrington went 3-for-4 for HBU with an RBI and a run scored. Rodarte and Holly Webb each went 2-for-3. Stiefel took the loss and allowed five earned runs and seven hits in two innings. She walked three and struck out one. Evans pitched the remaining four innings, allowing three hits, zero walk and striking out five.

Damian was the only Bearkat with more than one hit, as she went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Courtney Shoenemann earned the victory, allowing four earned runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings. She walked three and struck out one. Tomi Garrison relieved Shoenemann and got the save, allowing three hits in 2.2 innings, while walking two and striking out one.

HBU (2-3) will head to El Paso to face UTEP in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Feb. 19. First pitch is set for a 4 pm CST start.
