WSOC: HCU Heads South to Face UTRGV on Thursday

The Huskies will face the Vaqueros as conference opponents for the first time

EDINBURG, Texas – The HCU women's soccer team begins a three-game road stretch on Thursday with a visit to Southland Conference newcomer UT Rio Grande Valley at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The Huskies (3-6-3, 1-1-1 SLC) and Vaqueros (4-3-4, 0-0-3 SLC) have met twice before, in 2015 and 2017, with each contest ending in a tie. The lone matchup in Edinburg ended in a 0-0 draw after double overtime in 2015.

HCU is coming off a 1-1 weekend in Southland Conference play, earning a 2-0 win over Nicholls before falling to SFA, 2-0. UTRGV, meanwhile, has played to three-straight draws to open conference play and the Vaqueros find themselves a point behind the Huskies in the standings. HCU is tied for the league lead in road wins this season, with two, while UTRGV owns a solid 4-1-2 mark on its home turf.

Senior Katie Marker, with one goal and one assist this season, currently stands tied for ninth in career points at HCU with 35 (13 goals, 9 assists) while her 13 goals are tied for 10th most in a career all-time. Freshman goalkeeper Emmy McKeon is second in the conference with 5.3 saves per game and her .803 save percentage ranks third.

Savannah Frisby, a junior, leads UTRGV with four goals and one assist for nine points this season while four other players are tied for second with two goals each. In goal, freshman Heiddis Sigurdardottir is second in the SLC with a 0.865 goals against average.

HCU will have a full week off before returning to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 11, against Northwestern State at 7:00 p.m. in Natchitoches, La.
