WSOC: Huskies and Lions Set to Tangle this Thursday at Sorrels Field

The Huskies put their 10-match unbeaten streak on the line

HOUSTON – The HCU women's soccer team has a chance to set a new record for the longest unbeaten streak in program history on Thursday evening when the Huskies host East Texas A&M at Sorrels Field for a Southland Conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.

HCU (7-3-5, 3-0-3 SLC) is 6-0-4 over its last 10 matches and sits in a tie for second place in the SLC with 12 points, one point behind Lamar in first place. The SLC standings are cluttered at the top with the top seven teams in the standings within three points of one another. Lamar sits at the top with 13 while Southeastern, in seventh, has 10 points. The top seven teams in the final standings will qualify for the 2026 SLC Tournament in Commerce, Texas.

The Huskies remain the lone SLC team without a loss in conference play after their trip to Natchitoches, La. last weekend to face the preseason favorite Northwestern State Lady Demons saw HCU fall behind 1-0 before scoring three goals in the game's final 18 minutes to come home with a 3-1 victory. In conference play, HCU has outscored opponents 12 to five for a +7 goal differential which is the highest in the league. UIW is second at +5.

HCU has two players, sophomores Isabella Alamo and Paisley Barela, tied for the league-lead with three goals in conference play while Olivia Rossman leads the league with five assists in six conference games. For the season, Barela leads the Huskies with 15 points (6 goals, 3 assists) with Isabella Dillow right behind her with 14 points (5 goals, 4 assists).

East Texas A&M (3-7-4, 2-3-1 SLC) is currently eighth in the conference standings with seven points. The Lions have scored the fewest goals in the SLC this season, with 15 in 14 games, but have also only been shutout three times in those 14 matches. Junior Allyson Reed and senior Kristen Sueltz are the only two Lions with more than one goal this season. Reed leads the team with five goals and has a pair of assists while Sueltz has four goals and one assist. Emmy Finlinson has played the majority of minutes in goal for ETAM and has a goals against average of 1.48 with a .738 save percentage.

East Texas A&M won the first three meetings between the two programs but HCU has won three of the last four and has knocked the Lions out of the SLC Tournament in two of the past three seasons.

Following Thursday's game, the Huskies will travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday, Oct. 25, at 12:00 p.m.
