LAKE CHARLES, La. – HCU fell behind in the first half but sophomore Isabella Alamo scored the equalizer with a long-range strike in the second half of a 1-1 Southland Conference draw against the McNeese Cowgirls at Cowgirl Field on Sunday afternoon.
The first half was busy with HCU (6-3-5, 2-0-3 SLC) goalkeeper Emmy McKeon pressed into five saves while the Huskies put two of seven attempts on target. The Cowgirls (8-5-2, 3-1-2 SLC) hit paydirt first, however, on the lats shot of the first half. Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond found the net in the 41st minute with an assist from Ella Grace Davis, making it 1-0 heading into the half.
Just over five minutes into the second half, Olivia Rossman found Alamo near midfield with a lot of space in front of her. The sophomore dribbled forward and took advantage of McNeese keeper Shannon Dempsey stepping a bit too far forward and sent a shot from long distance over her head and off her fingertips into the goal. HCU put an additional five shots on goal in the final 45 while limiting the hosts to just three attempts on goal.
Both teams put nine shots on the target with HCU holding a 19-17 advantage in total shot attempts. Both teams earned three corner kicks. In goal, McKeon finished with eight saves for the second-highest total of the season and most in an SLC game so far. Alamo's goal was her second of the year with Rossman's assist her fifth.
HCU heads right back to Louisiana next Thursday, Oct. 15, for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against the Northwestern State Lady Demons in Natchitoches.
