FRISCO, Texas —- Houston Christian University placed five players on the Southland Conference All-Academic teams as announced Wednesday afternoon by the conference office. It is the most student-athletes selected in one season for the Huskies.

Outfielder AB Garcia and Haylie Savage were both automatic selections to the First Team, while Jasie Roberts, Avery Drake, and Katy Janes were all named to the second team. For Roberts, it is the third time in her career that she has earned the academic accolades.

A redshirt freshman left-fielder from Cypress, Garcia carries a 3.20 GPA in Accounting. She led the SLC in both batting average (.419) and runs scored per game. Her batting averaged was 18th in the NCAA, and she ranked fourth in the league in hits while going 19-23 in the stolen base department.

The academic honors complete a banner season for Garcia. She was named to the TUCCI/NFCA National Freshman of the Year Top 25 watchlist prior to be selected to the NFCA All-Region squad. She was a first-team All-Southland Conference outfielder and was also chosen the SLC Freshman of the Year.

A sophomore third baseman from Angleton, Savage adds academic honors after being named All-Conference for the second year in a row. She is a Kinesiology-Wellness Management major with a 3.56 GPA.

She led the team in home runs (seven) and RBI (41) while batting .341 on the season with a team-best 19 multi hit games.

Savage was tied for third in the SLC in RBI, finished fourth in homers and ended with 59 hits, fifth in the league.

Jasie Roberts becomes a three-time all-academic honoree with her second-team selection. The junior catcher/outfielder from Pasadena carries a 3.97 GPA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

She was second on the club in doubles with nine, and drove in 22 runs on the season, third best on the club.

Drake collects second-team academic honors on top of her second-team All-Conference accolades. The Belton native graduated in May with a Kinesiology degree.

She had 15 multi-hit games batting as the leadoff or number two hitter in the lineup, including three three-hit games and two with four. She finished the season with 57 hits, good for seventh in the league, and was 17-19 in steals, giving her 39 for her career, which is fifth best in school history.

Katy Janes finishes off the quintet of HCU honorees, earning the first academic honors of her career. She is majoring in Allied Health and carries a 3.95 GPA overall.

The junior right-hander from Huffman was second on the team in victories, and first on the staff with 12 complete games. She tossed her first career no-hitter in a 1-0 victory at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 16.

All nine Southland softball institutions were represented among the 2023 Southland Academic All-Conference teams. HCU was second only to regular-season and tournament champion McNeese, which had six players honored including Student-Athlete of the Year Whitney Tate.

The All-Academic teams are voted on by head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance staff members from each Southland institution.
