SB: AB Garcia named to NFCA All-Region 2nd Team

Second accolade this season from NFCA for frosh outfielder



LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- AB Garcia has been chosen as an All-Region honoree by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, as she was named one of the three outfielders on the Division 1 Central Region Second Team. 

It is the second time this season Garcia has been honored by the NFCA, as she was also selected to the TUCCI/NFCA National Freshman of the Year Top 25 watchlist in late April.

A redshirt freshman from Cypress, Garcia was a First-team All-Southland selection in addition to being named the 2023 SLC Freshman of the Year.

Garcia led the SLC in batting average at .419, which is also 22nd in the NCAA. She ranked first in the league in runs scored per game, third in hits with 62, and was fifth in the in stolen bases per game. She finished 19-23 in that department for the season. 

Her SLC Freshman of the Year superlative was the first such individual accolade for the Huskies since 2013, when the Schwirtlich sisters garnered both Freshman of the Year (Kirsten) and Newcomer of the Year (Lauren) honors. 

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections. NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated student-athletes (eight maximum) and voted for the teams. 

All awarded student-athletes now become eligible for the 2023 NFCA Division I All-America squads.
 
Garcia was one of four Southland Conference student-athletes to be selected. Primrose Aholelei of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was named as a pitcher on the third team of the Central Region, while second baseman Erin Krause of Nicholls and catcher Bailey Krolcyzk of Southeastern earned second and third team honors, respectively, in the South Region.
