SB: Season comes to close for Huskies with loss in SLC Tournament

HCU falls in elimination game to Nicholls in Hammond bracket

HAMMOND, Louisiana --- Houston Christian University saw its season come to a close with a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Nicholls State University on Friday in the Hammond Bracket of the Southland Conference Tournament at North Oak Park. A pitcher's duel for most of the afternoon saw the Colonels put two insurance runs on the board in the sixth while stifling each rally HCU put together.

Cara Pitman set down the Colonels in order in the first two frames before a leadoff walk in the top of the third. With one out, Laylin Sturm laced a double to left center that scored Ally Mooneyham, and Sturm would then score on an errant throw during the ensuing rundown, giving Nicholls the 2-0 lead.

Nothing further would go on until the sixth. In the top half, the Huskies got back-to-back two-out singles from Hanna York and Ella Herrewig but failed to capitalize.

In the bottom half the Colonels got four hits from their first five batters, including an RBI triple from Reagan Heflin, who then scored on a Riley Rutherford single, doubling the lead to 4-0.

The Huskies would get out of the frame on a double-play on a fly out to Maddy Bailey, who then nailed pinch-runner Sydney Mann at the plate for her 10th assist of the season.

The Huskies again put two on with two outs in the seventh, but couldn't do any damage, bringing the game and the season to a close.

Leah Hammack went 2-3 for the Huskies, who got just six hits off Nicholls starter Molly Vandenbout (6-6).

Cara Pitman (9-11) took the loss for the Huskies, going 5.1 innings and walking two with one strikeout.

Likewise, the Colonels managed only six base hits as well, but half were for extra bases to back Vandenbout, who fanned five while issuing one free pass.

HCU ends its 2025 campaign at 17-33.
