HOUSTON – The HBU women's basketball team will look to become HBU's first team to win a Southland Conference regular season title outright when they host the McNeese Cowgirls at 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon in Sharp Gym.
Saturday is also senior day and the Huskies will honor seniors
Anna Maguire and
Patience Idoko for their academic and athletic achievements as Huskies.
HBU (15-9, 11-2 SLC) are coming off of a win against the New Orleans Privateers which guaranteed them at least a share of the regular season title in the Southland Conference at the conclusion of Saturdays league games. This win also marked head coach
Donna Finnie's 100
th career win since she took over HBU's basketball program.
Kennedy Wilson led the Huskies to their second come from behind win with a career high 20 points.
McNeese (13-13 8-5 SLC) come into Houston as hot as they have been all season, currently riding a four game win streak. Most recently they beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi and UIW at home.
Timia Jefferson leads the Huskies in scoring this season with 12.6 points per game followed by
N'Denasija Collins at 9.7 points per game.
Julija Vujakovic averages 9.2 points and has totaled 43 steals, 37 assists, and 12 blocks. She and
Abbey Sutherland are the anchors for HBU on defense.
Marilyn Nzoiwu has cleaned up the boards this season for HBU, averaging 7.4 boards per game having totaled 177 so far this season.
Kaili Chamberlin and Desirae Hansen lead the Cowgirls in scoring, averaging 11.2 and 11.0 points per game respectively. Divine Tanks leads McNeese in rebounding, pulling down 196 total boards, good for 7.5 per game.
The Huskies have won the last three meetings against the Cowgirls. The most recent game came back in January of 2022 which saw the Huskies walk away victorious, 82-74. In that game, Jefferson tied her career high with 28 points. Four Huskies scored in double figures, including Collins who had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, Wilson who had 12 and Vujakovic who had 11. Christina Gil had 22 for the Cowgirls.
The Huskies will next take the hardwood in the Southland Conference tournament which begins on March 10
th. The entire tournament schedule will be announced at the end of play Saturday once the final standings are confirmed.
